Please tell them to get away from the windows. It is not worth it to be standing there if the go. They could be seriously injured at a time when getting help is questionable. They need to get to a windowless room or closet in the house.

Just heard from son in Boynton Beach

#305 Postby deb_in_nc » Mon Oct 24, 2005 12:22 pm

He's in apt on top floor of condo (4th floor). He went to look out during the eye. Roof gone and other roof debris lying around, lost power at 8:30am. Hoping everything turns out okay. He is a Marine and is on leave due to a foot injury and a death in the family. I live in NC so the stress is something else.

Have we heard from Sanibel yet? I can't remember if that's Monroe or Lee county. I'll try the other thread.

Also interested to hear how X-Y-No fared in N. Miami after the power went out.

Many are without power. Perhaps Sanibel and x-y-no lost power.

I remember Sanibel writting he was logging off because he was getting high gusts earlier this morning.

just got my power back up here in palm beach gardens, fl. Wow, the backside of Wilma was very impressive, i would estimate we saw winds 5-10mph higher on the backside. Anybody know what the highest measured winds were here in the 1)palm beach county and 2)northern palm beach county

X-y-no lost power but was able to post afterward to say signing off...had to tend to some servers or something. But that was in the early stages of the eye. I hope everything is OK.

Have not heard from Sanibel, I'm a bit concerned.

Checking in from Sunrise

#312 Postby DAVE440 » Mon Oct 24, 2005 10:10 pm

Just set up the puter. Fired up the generator around 5pm.

We made it! Lost our metal doghouse cover for our chimney and the hat piece flew off too and landed in our yard. Dont know where the doghouse went. The frame for our screen blew out too. Screening must've held out a long time. Also during the storm 2 of our 3 skylights had a bit of leaking on the southern corners but they didnt seem to move at all.

Tell ya what. We went thru Andrew Frances Katrina and I've never heard howing wind like that!! Sounded like pounding on the wood covering the windows. The ceiling fans were vibrating and I thought they might come down. Front door (metal with styrofoam inside) was moving in and out against the door frame and I was afraid the frame wouldnt hold but fortunately it did. Got the news on now and they said Broward got the worst of it and its the worst hurricane for Broward in 6 decades!

I have a friend who lives in a condo on 12th floor bout a mile or two from the ocean in Lauderdale and decided to stay. Havent heard from him yet. My Aunt and Uncle live in Aventura just near the water and that area got hit hard too. Havent heard from them either as well as a few other relatives.

In our neighborhood...

Damage varies....ranging from none...to blown off shingles...completely demolished screened in patio frames. Uprooted trees including one directly across the street from me that lifted up the lawn and broke the water line to my neighbors house. The tree landed against the tailgate of a truck he had parked across his driveway but only damaged the tailgate door. It also damaged the edge of his brand new roof in 2 places. Then on the back side of the storm...that tree blew in the other direction and damaged the roof of the house next to him.

Another house lost part of its roof. Tar paper...some sheathing...flashing...most of which flew 3 houses away and hit a car in the driveway of the house right in front of mine across the street damging the door and breaking the drivers window. People who didn't know better left turbines on and of course most flew off and landed in other peoples yards. Some turbines actually stayed in place but got smashed like a sledge hammer hit em. Of course trees down everywhere and the ones standing are mostly stripped of leaves or have damaged branches.

No power here for over 11 hours now and more than 800,000 in Broward are out too. FPL says it might take weeks to restore all affected areas. Cable tv is out too (and of course broadband for those who have laptops or generators to power their PC). THIS IS WHY I HAVE DSL! Slower than broadband but More reliable! Never lost our phones and DSL is up.

Couldve been much worse for us at least. Others werent as fortunate.

All in all, this is the worst storm I've ever gone through.

I took some pics but not going to post now. Still have to look thru them then host before posting. Bout so shut the generator down too. Its getting late.

Hope everyone made it through alright.
Dave

Hi, I wanted to check in. I'm OK, but my roof lost some shingles, my tree in the front yard fell feet from my house. It was the worst since Andrew. I forgot to board up a window and it was blown out. But, nothing I can't fix. So damage is not huge, but some minor damage. We got off okay though, it could have been worse if those 100 mph gusts lasted longer. I'm on generator here.

Why is the woman's ethnicity reported? It isn't reported in the three deaths listed above hers. For that matter why is the sex or age of the persons listed?

These are the kinds of questions I ask.
