Will Wilma be retired(Part two)

#1 Postby Matt-hurricanewatcher » Tue Oct 25, 2005 2:17 am

Ok this is after the fact...It looks like Wilma slamed the Yuctan very hard maybe worst then Gilbert. The hotels are still there but reports look bad. I think Mexico will likely go to the WMO to ask for her retirement. We are just starting to get details on the damage in Florida...Will it be enough for America to go to the Wmo to ask for retirement of this storm we will find out....

Whats your personally thinking on Wilma's retirment...

Maybe Silly but a good poll to discuse it...Remember Bret of 1999 which did not get retired. Or Emily of 1993...

Hurricane Gordon of 1994 killed as many people as Katrina but no retirement...

The insurance industry estimated insured losses in Florida at anywhere from $2 billion to $9 billion. Officials said it was the most damaging storm to hit the Fort Lauderdale area since 1950.

This alone tells me WIlma will be retired

I have another related question. If there had been one more named storm earlier than Wilma, then Wilma would have been called Alpha instead. What would have happened in that case? Would they try to retire a greek letter? Does that even make sense?

I wonder if they might consider changing the naming plan for Altantic storms (to be more in line with other regions) after this record breaking season.

There was in fact a system that hit the outterbanks around late June. Surface data shown that a surface low had formed with 25 to 30 mph winds. It also looked very much like a tropical storm on satellite...With a tight core on the radar. Later that day it moved off shore...With a report to the northwest of it of 40 mph winds...The nhc also said that it had closed off a LLC.

So yes Wilma could of been Alpha

If this were a poll asking if Dennis should be retired I'd be apt to vote in it.

The fact that the yucutan received rainfall that was measured in FEET, that this was the 9th most powerful storm in the history of tropical cyclone records (including TYPHOONS), and that this storm slapped Florida around yesterday like nobody's business should give you an idea of what should be done with the name.

While her effects and pressure record should guarantee official retirement anyway, being a "W" storm would seem to assure Wilma a de facto retirement of sorts, as based upon history, the odds on seeing a "W" storm again in our lifetimes would seem relatively remote...this has been the mother of all hurricane seasons.

God help us if 2005-type seasons begin to occur in years to come with any degree of regularity.

OK...first of all...there is really no need for a poll for this. OF course this will be retired...everyone with any sense knows it.

Second...whoever voted "No" did so as a joke...I hope...because if they were serious I surely hope they don't try and post any advice or forecasts...because they need to sit silently on this board and learn...because it is obvious they have no clue at all (if they were serious). And if they are serious...we'll I'd love to bet my house on it :D

Bret was a minimal Cat 3 at its one landfall in an unpopulated part of Texas. Barely caused any damage. Wilma was a cat 4 at landfall in Mexico, spend over a day causing winds from 110-140mph there and then made landfall in Florida as a Cat 3 (125/953mb). This is stronger than Ivan, Rita and Dennis, not to mention Jeanne and Frances. In fact, Wilma is the third strongest storm to make landfall in the United States in the last 2 years right behind Katrina and Charley (windspeed, not pressure).

In addition, Wilma took down Gilbert's record. It took down Typhoon Forrest's record. It took down Mitch's record (strongest October storm). It is likely to cause more US damage than Charley and maybe more non-US western hemisphere damage than any other storm.

Like he said. Lowest pressure ever recorded in the atlantic basin;
what do you think ? LOL I swear, why do people make polls about the most obvious thing. This is as bad as the 'what was worse, katrina or ivan' poll

If Wilma isn't retired, the 49ers will win the Super Bowl in February.

Why don't we start another poll and ask whether or not Katrina will be retired?

I would retire Wilma for its Mexican damage, not its Florida damage.
