Although 2005 has had 4 major hurricanes hit the United States, I believe it also holds the record for most major hurricane landfalls in a single year. We can do this counting either truly distinct landfalls or just individual landfalls.
That might've been confusing. However, we've had 5 major hurricanes make landfall in the Western Hemisphere this year. Not sure if that's a record. Counting landfall areas, we have 8! major hurricane landfalls:
Dennis (Cuba and FL Panhandle)
Emily (Yucatan and the bulk of area of Mexico)
Katrina (Louisiana)
Rita (Texas/Louisiana)
Wilam (Yucatan and SW Florida)
If we count just landfalls themselves, 2005 still has the record since Katrina made 2 landfalls, Dennis made 3 I believe and Wilma made landfall on Cozumel Island as well.
Basically, this just goes to show that 2005 has been the season where major hurricanes have streaked across all landmasses. No one, except North and South Carolina (and thankfully NY and NE, since they would've been huge disasters) have been spared.
Good-bye 2005.

Katrina actually had 3 landfalls -- Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi. She clipped the MS River Delta part of LA before making landfall a 3rd time east of the LA/MS border.
