Wow. My area really took a beating yesterday. My power went off around 8 AM or so and is still out. 90% of South Florida is without power, the most ever I believe. The first eyewall was nothing compared to the backside. Winds were sustained at least at 85-90 mph as I was outside and could not stand. There were occasional gusts above 100 that would tear down limbs and make shingles go flying. I was outside and narrowly avoided being hit by a storage-garage door that went flying. Trees are snapped, unlike Frances and Jeanne. The winds were nothing in them compared to this. I saw parts of a mobile home dangling on a power-pole, as well as a dumpster that apparently went flying and split in half on a tree. As I type it is quite cold out, in the low to mid 50's. Definitely refreshing. I am unsure about what happened elsewhere, but I can only assume even more damage.

hey scorpion - i'm here in palm beach gardens and i know what you are talking about with the backside of the storm. I went out a couple of times on the front side and experienced some intense straight line winds. Also went out during the last part of the eye and as the backside eyewall came over. The winds went fron 10-15mph to 60-80mph in a matter of 1 or 2 minutes. I went in right away b/c there seemed to be something different about the backside. These winds may not have been much higher than what was experienced on the front side but they were a lot more turbulent. I saw a number of microbursts/mesoscale vorties where winds would start violently swirling. Most amazing thing i've ever seen

Re:
Hey there fellow Floridians
West Palm Beach here! Right off Palm Beach Lakes Exit --
Just an amazing storm all away around! The back winds were as strong if not stronger than front! Definately more gusts!
The wife and I rode it out on the top floor of our condo! Wow, we glued to our picture window like it was a big screen TV! What a view! During the back wind we became a bit more concerned (roof sounded like it was coming off) and withdrew into our safe room! What an experience, BUT will NOT do this again!!! (Palm Beach County was forcast to have only a Cat 1, But got a Cat3!?!)
Our entire complex had no structual damage but lots of large trees down, screening blown out on patios, and vinyl sidings removed, and fences are all down!!!
Good News is we do have power this morning (something short of a miracle -- but we are in a heavy retail/business area so guess they got this section up and runing quickly)
Hope everyone has a great day!!!!

sometimes you have to go outside. During Katrina We were sheltering in the kitchen in the back of the apartment with the wind blowing to the front. I was having to kick large sheets of metal roofing and other things away fron the gate to the patio to keep them from hitting the glass doors and breaking them. It was a safety thing not a fun thing. I was terrified. WILL NOT SHELTER IN PLACE AGAIN____EVER!!!!.

Yes when the back eyewall was coming in I was outside and could hear the rumble in the distance. It was incredible how fast the dark clouds were moving in. I was caught outside in 80-90 mph winds and gusts over 100 and was blown over many times. It took about 10 minutes to walk just a few hundred yards back to my house, I was literally crawling on the street getting pelted by rain and branches.

Most people will leave for a three. Everyone just got complacent and thought they were looking at a one/two. I guess everybody already forgot about Charley's devastating charge inland, and the widespread damage left by Frances, and the fact that Katrina caused over $2 billion in damages as a Cat1. In Florida, shouldn't people have known better by now?

You likely didnt experience a 1 then. Cat 1 winds are very strong, and people will think when they see 1 winds they are Cat 3.
I'm in the northern part of Broward. The damage seems to be cat 2 damage.
Even so, 1 or 2, the winds are impressive. Why people stay in a house for a 4 or 5 is beyond me.
