#1 Postby Derek Ortt » Tue Oct 25, 2005 10:53 am

I am one of the lucky ones. I suffered no damage from Wilma

for those wondering when nwhhc will be updated again. Hopefully, starting tomorrow, regular updates will be made again

Any idea what the highest wind speed / gust was for the Homestead - Perrine area?

sustained, probably strong tropical storm force or cat 1 since at rsmas, closer to the eye wall, had a max sustained of about 81 m.p.h.

that said, gusts were almost certainly over 100 m.p.h., maybe topping out at 110 m.p.h.

one thing I'd like to see for any homes that need to be rebuild is to fully use the Cayman or Bermudian building code, which is even more strict than the Miami one, which did mitigate damages to a significant degree, but the Cayman would would have helped even more

Glad you are OK Derek!

So you've described basically category 1 events at your location, is
that about right? I just started a thread asking for input fro folks
down there. The winds seem to only support a 1/2.

in Miami, we only had cat 1

I suspect cat 2 sustained were in southern Broward in the eye wall. The cat 3 sustained were likely in the everglades, and in the NW Bahamas

Key west came about 5 miles from being obliterated by that southern eye wall

That close?

I was guessing the path would be about 20-30 miles out.

I think it held Cat 3 status across the state but most of the Cat 3 winds never got down to the surface until it got off the East Coast.

since the winds didnt get to the surface, it was a 2 then in east Florida, but immediately came back, unfortunately for the Bahamina residents.

The reason it could not hold cat 3 across the state was because of the land friction, which slowed the winds. Once that term was dropped from the equation, the winds had to imemdiately increase, as they did

Glad everything is ok Derek. I had a peak wind gust of 72 mph. I recorded a pressure of 961 mb (28.82) at the height of the storm. The official wind gust in PSL was 92 mph. We got pounded by the backside of the storm. The eye never got this far either so we had no break at all. I couldn't believe how COLD it got when the wind came out of the NW. Talk about windchill. I was very happy I took the storm serious. 95 % of St. Lucie County lost power. I've been doing yard clean up all day. Old hat in this part of the country. How many years is this cycle going to last?!?!? :(
