Who is Considering Moving Out of Florida?

Do I ever plan on moving..? NO! Do I want too? Nah.. Do hurricanes scare me..? BRING THEM ON..

I even would not mind having a house on the coast. It's a beautiful area.. I would love to live on the East Coast over looking the Atlantic. Maybe 1 day that dream will become a reality..

I plan on staying a while..

Lived there from 84-2000 in Homestead. Came here to Minneapolis (which is really wonderful) but my husband wanted to go back to the warm winters so as I love him pretty much I will follow him down there. We are going to Cocoa Beach (which is just beautiful) and I'll only be 2 1/2 hours away from my son and daughter-in-law in Hialeah. But after Andrew in 92 I never wanted to see Florida again....I'm going to make him check the insurance stuff before we buy anything.

UPDATE: My husband has said that we can live in a Condo and just have insurance on our contents and let the association take care of the condo. Does that sound correct?

I'd like to move in the next few years, probably NC or CO. The hurricanes themselves don't bother me that much but the astronomical increases in insurance rates and high property taxes will probably do me in. My main problem with FL is that everything is being developed. No matter where I go in town now I pretty much need to allow 30 minutes or so of drive time at a minimum due to traffic and now they are building 3000 more houses in an already congested area with only three 2-lane roads for access. I went to Northern Michigan a few years ago and I'm still struck by what it was like to NOT hear traffic noises in the background all the time. I loved Florida back in the day (I'm native) but I can't stand what it is being turned into...

With 8 hurricanes hitting in 14 months and the high probability of many more to come over the next 20 to 30 years (we seem to be reverting back to the 1930s-1940s era of hyperactivity), I want a percentage of people that are thinking about moving.

This topic complements the current topic about the question of those who are considering moving out of the state.

Our course most of our South Florida posters are still in the dark so we will have to await their responses.

When you post something like this..........you got ta know that your gona get respone's from us 'inlanders'......even though my dad's whole side is from West Palm Beach.........and he told me when he was a kid how they used to swim with the baracuddas.......those fish with nasty looking teeth..LOL!!!

we live inland cause we are smart.......IMO......and we can go to the beach anytime.....1 hour or 1 and 1/2 drive......geez.....you cant beat that!!!!!!! us 'old generation' natives have learned to move inland............yea living on the beach is great........but??????.........we can visit it..........too much money on the coast............all it does is get "built up" and then "ripped down" by mother nature..........In My Opinion.......people that want to live on the water need some major bucks$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$........and thats coming from me...... a 32 year orlando native that dont live there anymore.......but i would never leave "the sunshine state"!!!!!!

After experienceing the eye of Wilma I have to say I'm undecided.I like the winter like temps in Florida,but I told my wife I rather deal with blizzards which cause 50 to 60mph winds.When it comes down to it I'll probably stay.

I'm here til the DH retires (10-15 years). Then we either go to N. Florida or else some other part of the deep south.

I have been living in florida this time around since 96. I have grown to like it here in NE Fl. I admit that hurricane season is stressful but just can't see myself or my wife wanting to go through the mess of quiting both our jobs, selling the house and moving the kids.

I have lived in Florida for 35 years and in the beginning loved the beaches and the area. In my later years I have grown to actually dislike it very much due to the over growth of the area that I live in. Now, unless you own beachfront property, the beach is off limits. The traffic jams are a norm due to the overbuilding and not enough roads to accomodate the tourists and the residents at the same time. On top of all that, we have the hurricanes that keeps us on edge.

Yes, I am more than ready to leave Florida, but we have our family, jobs and properties that keep us here. I am sure that one day the real super storm will come our way and wipe out the properties and the Lord willing that we survive, maybe then we will relocate. Talk until I am blue to my husband, finally convinced him we do need a storm shelter, finally he has agreed. Just hope he doesn't wait to long to build one.

If I lived on the coast (E or W) south of orlando, I'd probably try to find higher ground.
Since I live in Central FL, I can't get any further inland, unless I move north.. and that ain't gonna happen anytime soon!

I had enough with hurricanes last year. I was hit directly last season by both Frances and Jeanne and now this year Wilma decided to exit across me. I am leaving but north to Jax. It took a year to get our house repaired last year and it has been on the market to sell for 2 months now we have damage again! It is not easy to sell a house during hurricane season and I fear it will become even more difficult now. Anyway I'm leaving south florida soon as house sells

I wish not to be a message of doom and gloom, god knows enough of that going around. But, GOMer's, Floridians, you live on a pennisula, and it is basically flat, particularily the souther half of the state. Weather changes taking place should be quite obivious at this point.

FL is going to be trashed over coming years. sorry. Move.

I've seen a few posts like, if another one comes this year, then I'll leave. What if one doesn't come this year, then next year a Category 5 roars through your area? Then you'll be wishin' you did move when you had the chance! Also, the talk with the blizzards. They aren't that bad, we've been through many and the worst that happens is some snow. I'd take the blizzards over the hurricanes, because then I'd know my house will be still there when it is over.

Unfortunately I couldn't agree more. FL could easily be trashed over the next 20-30 years especially the southern 1/3 of the state.

I just think people are in denial still that we are going to be hit alot in the future.

Somehow, I think people will continue to pour into Florida, maybe for the same reason many people do many things - the "nothing bad can really happen to ME" syndrome?

added...the above was in relationship to hurricanes...I can easily think of lots of reasons to move to Fla. Here they say, man, you should have lived here 10/20 years ago! Fla is, man you should have lived here 30/40/50 years ago! But we all want a bit of the dream...and what we have is now.

The population of Florida will continue to grow (not that this is necessarily a good thing).

I moved from Florida to Louisiana a couple of years ago. And heck, I'm moving back to Florida in a couple of months! I wouldn't consider moving from Florida because of hurricanes. It's my home. Besides, I like storms. I didn't miss any of the excitement this season in Louisiana, that's for sure. It also became clear to me that Floridians handle hurricanes/evacs/recovery a lot better than these cajun folk!

It's silly to draw a climatological trend out of 2 years of data.

Building codes will improve as more hurricanes do hit the state. I'm staying.
