2005 Wind Swath Map??

#1 Postby wxman57 » Tue Nov 01, 2005 9:28 am

Perhaps someone can help me to locate a map. A month or so ago, someone here posted an image of the 2005 storms with wind swaths. It was valid up through September 12th. I am looking for an updated version of this map. Anyone know where to find it?

Here is a new update...

***WARNING*** In Previous postings of this image on this board, some members have claimed this map their own, which is ENTIRELY untrue. This picture was made by a friend of mine on another board, who does NOT even post here as far as I know. All credit goes to him and the message board that it was orginally posted on. The image on the upper left, containing this person's name, was added for this reason on this update.

my bad lower texas coast got tropical storm force winds from Emily by not enough to cause any damage to structure.if you look very close there is a small piece of the west coast of Flordia north of Tampa that didn't get hurricane or tropical storm force winds

look at that one spot in the southeastern GOM. Dennis, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma all crossed over there.

One of the things I find amazing about that map is the fact that there are only a few places along the GOM and up the East coast to Cape Hatteras that didn't have at least tropical storm force winds from a tropical cyclone this season!

One thing I was curious about is how those wind fields were produced. Were they the observed wind fields or the NHC forecast wind fields. I think it's pretty clear just looking at Rita's wind swath that the wind fields for TS and Hurricane-force were derived from the NHC's marine forecasts, not from actual observed data. The TS-force winds from Rita barely brushed Houston, but the map shows hurricane-force winds brushing Houston. You just cannot use those NHC marine wind radii over land, as surface friction causes significant wind reductions.

However, it's a very pretty map. Thanks for posting it.

Tampa Bay is unscathed!! (some minor wind/rain from dennis, but basically nothing).

Land friction didn't seem to affect Wilma's winds.
