This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Time for a new network.

#1 Postby HalloweenGale » Thu Nov 03, 2005 12:17 pm

TWC has gotten really bad. They're all fake, ever notice this? I think there should be a new network:

HIN: HURRICANE INFORMATION NETWORK.

Yeah, this should happen

So far i'm the lone "no" vote. TWC is evidently satisfying the need of many people. Those of you who voted "yes"...do you really go to TWC for your up-to-date weather info? I think you hit the internet first. Let's leave TWC alone, they're here for the long haul and you always have your remote control.

HIN (Hurricane Information Network) wouldn't that only be good from June1-Nov 30?

What would they do in the US when it isn't Atlantic Hurricane Season, or during times when there are periods of inactivity in the Atlantic Basin? They could do the WPAC region, but how many viewers would they get here in the US other than weather buffs? I think TWC is just fine, since it covers all the weather instead of just hurricanes (which in the U.S. is a seasonal thing)

I voted NO. TWC serves it purpose for the vast majority of people who want to have a cookout or go fishing next Saturday. Your here because you want to be more informed or because you love tropical weather and tracking it. The reason you know TWC is bad is because your more educated weather-wise than the majority of TWC's viewers. No one will ever compare Steve Lyon's to John Hope but then again, only the people in here know who John Hope was to begin with.
Let TWC plan the BBQ's and the beach days for the great majority of their viewers it's what they do best.

I'd work for a Storm2K channel........I have 27 credits in Broadcasting--------almost enough for a degree (my degree is in Geography) :)

I wonder how much money it'd take to put this together? I wish there was a shortwave TV network system like radio----someone could do this out of their basement and broadcast like Hams do. it'd be pretty cool

What do they do on Direct TV when they have the NBA/NFL/NHL/MLB tickets on. They don't have to have the Hurricane Information Network on all year. Trust me they have enough stations on cable and satelites to put a HIN for during hurricane season. I think it would go over quite well....

good idea

Oh yeah...been talking about that for months. We could cover the tropics, severe weather, winter storms, etc. It would be different than TWC and not forecast nice, sunny weather but concentrate on storms. I know a few NHCWX radio guys who would be excellent on there!

Now, how do we get started? ;)

I know they make a lot of mistakes, but they serve their purpose. Therefore, I voted NO. They are called "THE WEATHER CHANNEL," and hurricanes are not the only weather-related event, we also have tornadoes, rain, snow, and a lot more. TWC is trying to make weather a little more interesting for the public in general, making their sets look more like talk shows. I would love to have a channel just for hurricanes, I think it will be great to have a channel that covers all the tropical systems in the world but has a great focus in the Atlantic. In the dull days, they could have programs about how to be safe during and after the hurricanes. Have talk shows where global warming and other phenomena are discussed. I will be great for the scientific community!

No, don't get rid of TWC, but yes, start a new one that would cover hurricanes and other storms (winter, severe, etc.) when they are around, and has almost a Discovery Channel lineup the rest of the time with a focus on weather-topic shows.

Yes, I agree TWC is bad but for the average person they still give valuable info for them not necessarily for us members on s2k.I voted no.

I answered the poll no because the question was worded that TWC would go off the air and be replaced with HIN. I wouldn't have a problem with both of them being on, though I do wonder what would go on when the tropics are "all clear", especially in the US where the Atlantic is the basin to watch for the average person most of the time.

As to DirecTV I don't suscribe to it, I use cable instead, but I'd imagine that between NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB the whole year is covered, though I could see a need for 2nd or 3rd channels for when those seasons overlap, especially if they ever add an AFL (Arena Football League) season ticket.

TWC is for the laymen, which accounts for 99% of the population.

Storm2k Channel is a very good idea, many storm chasers and meteorologists would go to this channel, and we could chat and give some more advanced analyses and discussions about hurricanes, blizzards, tornadoes, or any other stuff.

There is already another weather network. That's NBC Weather Plus. If you just want the weather, forget TWC. NBC Weather Plus has tropical updates at 11 and 41 past every hour.
