I don't know who makes the anemometers on the ASOS sites (I'm assuming you are talking about ASOS). RM Young is a manufacturer that is highly regarded for quality anemometers. One of those (an RM Young Wind Monitor) will likely cost you about $900. You could always spring for a sonic anemometer (which measured 3D winds), but those are probably >$2000. I think ASOS/AWOS anemometers are cup-type anemometers, as compared to the torpedo-style / propeller-style of the RM Young anemometers, however.

RM Young
We use RM Young anemometers on our Tahoe and on our remote wind tower applications. The Wind Monitor is about $854 from http://www.youngusa.com and are worth every penny. You will also need a $750 Wind Tracker to see what the anemometer measures- a lot of money but extremely accurate. All of my reports to the NHC are from RM Young anemometers. They know they can depend on my crew because we use the high end gear. Good to see other people looking for the nice equipment- it makes a big difference.
