The Weather Channel brings in Lewis Black?

NEW YORK -- The Weather Channel forecast: a high-pressure system of comedy.

The cable channel will feature Lewis Black - known for his rants on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" - in a handful of segments starting Wednesday night.

He's the first in what the Weather Channel hopes is a series of celebrity guests.

"We're going to try a few segments to spice things up a little bit," said Terry Connelly, the network's senior vice president and general manager.

Black gets the chance to try out some of the network's forecasting maps and chat on camera with weathercaster Dave Schwartz. He also gets to deliver a few comic riffs on global warming and airport delays, Connelly said.

Connelly quietly put out the word recently, asking celebrities to drop by if they're near the company's Atlanta headquarters. Black, a closet weather fan, was quick to reply.

The Weather Channel hopes occasional celebrity guests liven what's often a staid presentation. The network has begun experimenting with a weekend morning show that puts the weathercasters on couches instead of behind desks, and is considering a weekday show that Connelly called a cross between "The View" and Martha Stewart's daytime program.

The Weather Channel does well in the ratings when, say, there's a hurricane, but needs a boost for days of more sedate weather.

"Lewis Black on the Weather Channel is unpredictable," Connelly said, "and we're in the business of predictions."

Sometimes it really pays to adhere to the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid). TWC will never learn.

I miss the mid 90's weather channel.

That little twisty turny globe thing they do now for the five day forecasts just annoys me to no end. I've defected to the NOAA website. Give me information, not eye candy.

Stand-up comedy on TWC

#6 Postby Storminole » Sun Nov 13, 2005 2:55 am

I've seen Lewis Black's appearances on TWC and I don't think it's a good fit at all. I tune in for meteorological info, not stand-up comedy. I think most regular watchers will be put off by his style, which is better suited to Comedy Central.

I can understand TWC's interest in boosting ratings. I've tolerated 'Storm Stories' well, especially considering they rerun their episodes into the ground. But I'll just be reaching for the remote whenever this new guy comes on.

I'd assume a lot of time, money and planning went into this decision, which just makes it more frightening what the demographics show about the *average* TWC watcher (ie: consumer of commercial goods). A shame that there is thought to be a need to make what is basically a science entertaining in a humourous way to keep viewers. But then, other countries have those half stripped weather girls; maybe using comedy is just a testing ground!
