Police are investigating the death of a man who was killed while working with a charitable organization to repair a hurricane-damaged home.
Lt. Steve Brinson with the Port Arthur Police Department says shortly before 8 a.m. Monday, officers responded to a call about a structure collapsing and a man trapped at 1624 Gulfway in Port Arthur. When officers got to the scene they found 49 year old Raymond Schmidt pinned underneath the porch roof. Paramedics and firefighters used air bags to lift the roof off of Schmidt. He was taken to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital where he died. Schmidt was from Midlothian, Virginia and was a volunteer for the Samaritans Purse charitable organization, which is doing hurricane relief work in Southeast Texas. According to a co-worker, Schmidt was working underneath the porch when it fall on top of him.
