"Merry Christmas"
I think it is ridiculous that some stores are not saying "Merry Christmas" anymore. I remember last year when employees told me "Happy Holidays", I told them "Merry Christmas!" You would think that they would realize that they're making more people mad by boycotting saying what most people are celebrating, instead of trying to appease a select few. Unfortunately, some of the stores doing this are places I often shop. Target, Walmart and Costco are among those banning "Christmas"

Here's an excerpt from the Nov. 9th O'Reilly show.
O'REILLY: "Factor Investigation" segment tonight: As you know, Christmas has become controversial in America. Public displays of the federal holiday are under attack by the ACLU [American Civil Liberties Union], and some department stores even tell employees to avoid saying "Merry Christmas." So we decided to look at some retail policies this year, and here's what we found out: Sears/Kmart would not answer our questions. Spokesman Chris Braithwaite simply ducked the issue. Their website banners: "Wish Book Holiday 2005." They were the worst we had to deal with. OK? Sears/Kmart. JCPenney says its catalog is always called "Christmas catalog." Federated Department Stores -- Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Burdines -- says the words "Merry Christmas" will be used in most advertising. Same thing at May, Filene's, Lord & Taylor, and Marshall Field's. But Kohl's refused to define how the company will deal with Christmas. Dillard's, however, will use the slogan "Discover Christmas, Discover Dillard's." So there you go. Shop where you like the atmosphere. Just remember, Kohl's and Sears/Kmart, basically, not all right.

Yep, notice most stores use X-mas or something like that to, I say the majority boycott them until they change their ways...I should just become an employee at Wal-mart or another store and say Merry Christmas, then when they fire me, I should sue them for infringing my Right of Free Speech, 1st amendment in the Bill of Rights...

When the department stores did away with the "Merry Christmas" greeting, it was to comply with freedom of religion laws, They don't want to offend consumers who are nonchristian. Just remember, 1/5 of US are not christians. Would you like it if people started telling you "Happy Hanukkah" regardless your religion?

I agree that people should be able to say MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! However, one problem i have is that even before the pumpkin and especially before the turkey day (heck some times even before the 4th) it seems that the fat guy in the suit is crammed down our throats!
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!! i will say again on CHRISTMAS! but not before. I like Thanksgiving---more so every year it seems!

I think any holiday greeting is appropriate. Stepping on eggshells to not offend anyone has gotten incredibly out of hand these days.
I'm pagan, but I don't run around feeling like less of a person because someone greets me with "Merry Christmas". I welcome it. This is the time of year to be nice and greet everyone you see with positive intent (I wish it would happen every day, however).
If folks are secure in their belief system, then the traditional holiday greeting in this country shouldn't offend them.

LOL
Yes, holiday commercialism has spiralled out of control. On October 30, the day before Halloween, I spent 2 hours trying to find a pumpkin to carve with the little ones (we've been travelling a lot this year and this was my first opportunity to get pumpkins).
I checked out all of the grocery stores in my area that usually have a big bin of them by the registers, and none were to be found. BUT - I could find prominently displayed Christmas-related items in each store. I finally found a pumpkin patch still in operation at a church a few towns over.
Stores won't let employees say "Merry Christmas" - but they sure do want Christians to spend their money. Deplorable.

Yeah, it's the same way here in Canada... some years ago, it was even hard to hear a Christmas carol on the radio..any religious carol was near impossible to hear.
Now in recent years, that has changed a bit, (we even have all-christmas formatted FM radio stations now) but when people tell me Happy Holidays, I look them in the eye and wish them a Merry Christmas to them and their family.
Kill them with kindness, show them no malice... it is the only way
