TULSA, Okla. -- An Oklahoma preacher said he wants to pray for a man who allegedly punched him in the face during a Sunday church service.

The Rev. Billy Joe Daugherty said he has met with his alleged assailant at the Tulsa jail, but Steven Wayne Rogers showed no remorse and offered no apology.

Daugherty said he was punched after telling the Biblical story of Paul and Silas being beaten and thrown into jail. He said the attack "was like an illustrated sermon."

The episode was videotaped as part of the service and broadcast on TV news shows.

Daugherty said he didn't know his attacker and doesn't plan to press charges.

Rogers is in jail after being arrested Sunday for failing to appear in court on a charge of violating a protective order.

Eric, it seems to be getting dangerous to go to church,
anymore. I was just reading our Lawrence County paper,
today, and, a minister in Lawrenceburg had his life
threatened by a fellow who showed up drunk, simply
because the minister talked to him before the service and
invited him to come back. When the man started cursing
and threatening the minister's life, some of the church
deacons went in and called the local authorities. The man
was taken to jail. And, like this incident and your story,
you never know who's sitting in the congregation!

The fellow who did the punching looked deranged. I feel sorry for the preacher. It is safer to be a sex addicted school teacher chasing 14yo boys than a preacher.....MGC

Definately not to condone the prisioners actions by punching the preacher. But is it ok for a Preacher to preach to you when the preaching is not wanted. I had a visitor one day from a Protestant faith and he held me captive on my front porch for a very long when I tried unsuccessfully to tell him politely that I was not interested in persuing the conversation with him.... How much is too much? I know many religions encourage their parishoners to "Witness" to folks. But if they are told three times that they did not want to enter the conversation with that witnessing person, isn't that alittle too much? I finally had to be very direct and even rude with the man to get him to leave. I thought about telling him I was going to call the police and have him arrested as a trespasser. I just have my own set of beliefs and they are Christian beliefs and I feel I do not need someone to tell me how to live my life. I live my life for God first and then for myself and I don't welcome someone trying to preach to me when in fact they may be a bigger sinner then I'am... I hope I didn't start anything here, but I just felt I should make the point that some people just do not want to be preached too!

Obviously, Steve, this was premeditated, "with malice and forethought"...the suspect was looking to deck a preacher, maybe this one in particular, but who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of *expletive unwritten* like this jerk?

UPDATE...seems this man assaulted Oral Robert's son some 15 years ago, but wasn't charged; he was on a weekend pass from a state institution, when he wandered into this church and attacked this pastor. The pastor also stated on the news this morning that he won't press charges, either.

I appreciate the Preacher's that do not want to file charges because they feel it is the Christian thing to do to forgive those who have tresspassed against them. But I feel the Preacher's can still forgive them but they also need to hold their assaulants accountable for their actions and in this world holding someone accountable means pressing charges against them!

Well if he was on a weekend pass from a State Institution, he's back there now and is likely not to get another pass anytime soon. Also, if they HAD pressed charges against a person already committed the charges would be dismissed and the suspect sent back to the Funny Farm.

Just a guess, but perhaps this man was brutalized by HIS father, who may have been a "preacher" (most likely untrained, little formal education or theological school at all)...it's called "transference", folks.
