Need some clarification

#1 Postby Brent » Tue Nov 29, 2005 10:58 pm

If a storm were to form in January... would it get a 2005 name or a 2006 name? I always thought 2006...

It will named Alberto.

Remember 2003, a tropical storm formed in April and was named Ana, the first name for the 2003 hurricane season.

if it forms prior to Dec 31st at 7pm EST, it would be Zeta (or whatever Greek letter we are at). If it form at or after Dec 31st at 7pm EST, it would be Alberto.

Of course, the weird situation is having 30L.ALBERTO

Forms as a tropical depression prior to 00Z Jan 01, becomes a named storm after that.

Oh course, if something forms on December 31st, it'll likely be more like 32L, the way 2005's going. You guys are all assuming that something might form then and nothing will form until then. 2005 isn't going to like that.

Still, it'd be really fun to see 30L.Alberto or 32L.Alberto. I wonder what the odds are. Would the B storm be 02L.B or 01L.B?

I am not so sure it would get the 2006 name since it is a 2005 storm if it forms on December. Now, if something is classified at 10 p.m. on Dec 31, it would then get the classification of TD 1 since it would already be Jan 1 on UTC time
