I remember vacationing in New Orleans...the night before Katrina hit
I had a horrible sinking feeling and was praying for all people
along the gulf coast in its path...it's devastating to see a place
where you have fond memories destroyed.

I have also visited Marco Island, Stuart, and West Palm Beach
many times for vacation as a child. These
areas have also been struck and when I drive through these areas it's
pretty painful to see the result (2004 and 2005 seasons).

I can appreciate your desire to lighten things up, but I can very easily see the other side of not being able to feel light about it at all. No harm on your part, no foul...it's been a season beyond anything ever known, and the impact is one of those forever life changing, for many thousands of people. I think in moments, those most affected must have their times of black humor, simply to get through the days and nights...but for me, I respect it as an inside joke I can't share.
Good to try though! The weight is a heavy one for all of us who paid attention. We know how blessed we personally were this year, May next year be more kind to Florida and the Gulf States, Mexico, (forgive not being able to name all the other countries affected - my name memory failure) and the island people who, without named storms, suffered immensely as well.

This has been one h-e double hockey sticks season. This one I am glad it is over, but this area is STILL REELING fom Katrina. After what I been through personally, I don't really feel like celebrating.

is there a reason why you think the east coast will get hit? or is it just a guess since they were spared this year?

Next year will not bring more canes, but they will bring more devastating ones. I have a bad feelin next year will be much, much worse as far as landfalling ones.

Okay... that's just crazy. Yes, there is a slim chance that next year could be terrible and even worse than this year, but there is also the same chance that a nuclear missile could go off somewhere. Actually, the latter might be somewhat higher. What's left to outdo this year? We would need 2 major cities to get hit or NYC to get hit by a major.

More than likely something will hit the East Coast. But they've been hit a lot of times before and the damage totals have always been the same. 3-6 billion dollars. Floyd, Isabel, Fran are the classic examples in the last 10 years alone. Other storms do less, Dennis, Bertha, Bonnie, Ophelia, Alex. There were all hurricanes at landfall. The first set were Cat 2s or 3s with pressures in the 950s, 960s. It would take 10 storms of Cat 2-3 strength hitting the NC coastline to cause Katrina's damage. Somehow, I doubt that's going to happen.

Even a Cat 4+ to NC or SC would not cause damage on the order of Katrina. I wonder if it would cause damage like Ivan, Charley or Wilma. There just isn't that much to destroy... granted there is some, but the plethora of examples proves that there isn't that much, to destroy along the immediate VA, NC, SC coasts.

The East Coast tends to get hit a lot. Like at least once every year by a hurricane and at least once every 2-3 years by a Cat 2+ (since 1995).

1996 brought Bertha and Fran. 1998 brought Bonnie. 1999 brought Dennis and Floyd. 2003 brought Isabel. 2004 brought Alex and Charley. 2005 brought Ophelia. I might be missing something from 2000-2002.

How about a cat 4 hitting New York City? Farmers almanac is "forcasting" a cat 4 into NY city and another hurricane into NY city by the end of 2006. one at the beginning of the season and one near the end of the season. That I would think would do more damage then Katrina considering we aren't prepaired for hurricane up here in the north east!

I look at canes like a virus. People are viruses, when they infest one region they go to the next and the next, and the cycle begins all over again. Just like canes, they infest one region and go on to the next. I think the last few years have showed us that canes have a mind of their own despite clmo. I know it souds crazy, but think about it a little bit...
