Prepare for cable raising rates

Well I guess I will have to be prepared for that raise soon but I hope that new interesting channels come to Puerto Rico.Adelphia which is my provider is good here so I dont have bad things to say about them except for what I said of adding more channels in digital such as more sport channels,movies etc.

The Budget Suites of America in the Las Colinas suburb of Irving has their own cable via DIRECTV Satellite System. One day I was watching the Olympics on the USA Network there, and all of the sudden, the picture went out. I was like, "What's goin' on? There's no rain in the forecast." But when I looked out the window, SURPRISE!!

We switched from cable to at first - nothing (had bunny ears rigged up in the window for better reception. We finally went with Satellite and haven't looked back since. It's just a much better deal. At first we had one TV, one Sat. receiver, their lowest tier and our monthly bill was only $24.99. Ah, but in time you add another TV, local channels, a DVR and now we're up to $42. But if you only want one TV and Sat., nothing fancy it is very reasonable.

I still miss local wx forecasts with TWC, that you receive with cable. But I've learned to live w/o them.

And it took a while to get use to several seconds, before stations dropped in. Not sure how I can word this, but if you are flipping thru cable channels, you see a picture, with satellite, there's a lag time (black screen) before it appears. Again, we adjusted and now watch one channel, with the schedule pulled up, and scan other channels this way.

It's just a matter of budget and what you're willing to put up with.

Yeah... my uncle has DirecTV and I've seen how it works before.

It's just not economically feasible when you have 5 TV's(you have to have a reciever for each one). The monthly bill would be outrageously ridiclous(even worse than cable), even for the basic packages.

Brent - we have high speed thru our monthly phone bill. We had it in place long before we quit cable.

On one hand I'd like to go back to cable, b/c most rooms in our house are cable ready (bedrooms), however each one doesn't have a TV. But the possibilities are there.

I do miss having decent channels in our bedroom (we have a family room and a basement TV hooked up to Satellite). One option is we can take the family room TV remote and access that Satellite box, watching these channels on the bedroom TV. But then no one can watch that family room TV, b/c it is being controlled by the person in my bedroom, using the remote. Sounds so complicated! I remember my husband trying to "sell" me on this option....I've never tried it. I think you have to aim the remote at the wall, towards the family room TV. Too much work!!! LOL These are moments when I ask - tell me again why we no longer have cable? he he

One down side to Satellite is it can go out in severe storms. But it's usually right back on.

By now I'm used to it.

Oh yeah... that's why we don't have a satellite.

See, in order for us to have it and it work properly(everyone watch something different), we'd have to have a different reciever for each TV. The cost adds up.

i hate satille, for one, I just like cable, for two, every time you have a nasty t-storm hit, the sat goes down, so during a hurricane, as long as we have power and cable, i can watch the 24/7 radar we have here, can you do that with sat??? nope... plus the sat probably doesnt get the 24/7 radar for around here... So, with my cable i can stay on top of the storm...

I have Directv. I prefer satellite to cable. I get more channels on the satellite than cable offers here. Even though the cable went digital, I still like the satellite picture better than digital cable. When I did have cable I would have service outages on a greater frequency compared to satellite. Lightning would hit somewhere on the system knocking out a distribution amp and no cable for hours compared to just a brief time during the most heavy of thunderstorms. Had I had cable after hurricane Katrina than I would still be waiting for service. I soon as I got power back I had TV with satellite........MGC

Oh believe me... I've had my share of cable outages and fits with trying to get an explanation. Charter has improved a lot in the 3 years I have had them. During the first year to year and a half, there would be outages for no reason. Bright sunny day, no clouds, outage for 2-3 hours(this was rare, like once in a blue moon) but it did happen, and then there would be little brief outages much more frequently. The internet service would go out even more than that, but it has also greatly improved.

It's just not possible for us to have a satellite with 5 TV's...

Every sat-system I've seen is unacceptable. The picture and sound are as good as cable, but every system - regardless of weather - has dropouts of signals. You lose picture and get "Acquiring Signal" or similar message - at any time of day or night - raining or not. Maybe I'm just a Nervous Nellie, but it gets to be like the Chinese Water Torture. I start to anticipate the next loss of signal and just can't enjoy the shows. Maybe the Orlando area is just Satellite Heck or something. My father-in-law had a system put in - absolute crap. The company even put in a second dish - just as bad - and two dishes stuck on the house looked even crappier. He is within five miles of Orlando Executive Airport, so maybe that is an issue? Radar, radios or something? Eh, I'll stick with cable. I wish that we could pick and pay for the individual channels we want.

Ditto Brent - I used to do this, years ago.......now if you unplugged it all, programmed shows wouldn't record, I'd have to pry my kids off the computer (another thing you should unplug).......

So the better question is:

Does ~anyone~ unplug their TV during thunderstorm?

We have a surge protector for the computer and the company that makes it has a warranty if lightning goes through it and zaps the computer.
