Don't know if this means the threat of wintry precip is reduced for tonight or not.

MEANWHILE...DRY AIR IN THE MID-LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE HAS BEGUN
TO SPREAD ACROSS THE AREA FROM NORTHERN MEXICO. PRECIPITATION HAS
DIMINISHED ACROSS THE SOUTHWESTERN HALF OF NORTH TEXAS AS A RESULT OF
THIS...WITH THE TREND EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE AFTERNOON.
HOWEVER...A WEAK UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE CURRENTLY OVER NEW MEXICO
WILL APPROACH NORTH TEXAS THIS EVENING...AND MAY ENHANCE FREEZING AND
FROZEN PRECIPITATION ACROSS THE AREA ONCE AGAIN.

DESPITE A DECREASE IN PRECIPITATION...TRAVEL CONDITIONS ARE ALREADY
HAZARDOUS ACROSS MUCH OF NORTH TEXAS. MOTORISTS ARE URGED TO USE
EXTREME CAUTION IF VENTURING OUT ONTO AREA ROADWAYS THIS AFTERNOON.
IT IS ALSO ADVISED THAT YOU CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT
CONCERNING ROAD CONDITIONS IN YOUR AREA.

It's sleeting on and off now. The parking lots have begun to get a bit slick, although it's still fine to walk on.

At home now, the yards and rooftops are white with sleet. Temp is 22 with a windchill of 9. Many of the roads are very slick with patchy ice, some parts of I-20 are closed due to wrecks and frozen bridges.

On a lighter side, the Fireplace is going and the hot coco is ready. :D

Wow what an event we had last Christmas along the S and SE TX Coast.
Just amazingly wonderful event of a lifetime. It was the snowfall I always looked for all my childhood. All those endless nights of waiting for snow finally paid off after 31 years. Last real snowfall like that was 1973. Just perhaps (being wishful....:) our next 1895 20: snowstorm will be this Winter for Houston-Galveston. Why not shoot for the stars or snow after our last white Christmas.

what was the reaction in the northern states when they heard that some locations between Houston/Victoria had 12-18 inches of snow?Thats a big snowfall. for the northeast US thats enough to shut down the big cities

An inch of snow is significant here... Everything shuts down at the first mention and everyone goes into a panic and stocks up like we're going into the next ice age.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
323 PM CST WED DEC 7 2005

.DISCUSSION...
SURFACE OBS INDICATE THAT THE ARCTIC COLD FRONT IS BEGINNING TO
ENTER OUR NW COUNTIES AND HAS PASSED CALDWELL AND HEARNE. THE
TEMPERATURE IN HEARNE DROPPED FROM 45 TO 36 IN TWO HOURS AFTER THE
FRONT PASSED. FURTHER NORTHWEST...BOTH WACO AND TEMPLE HAVE
TEMPERATURES IN THE UPPER 20S WITH PERIODIC LIGHT FREEZING/FROZEN
PRECIPITATION BEING REPORTED. THE MODELS SEEM TO BE A LITTLE
BEHIND THE CURVE WITH THE STRENGTH OF THE COLD ADVECTION
ASSOCIATED WITH THIS FRONT.
THINK THAT TEMPERATURES OVER OUR FAR
NW COUNTIES LIKE BRAZOS AND BURLESON WILL DROP BELOW FREEZING BY
AROUND 03Z...POSSIBLY AS EARLY AS 00Z...WHICH WILL BRING THE
THREAT OF FREEZING PRECIPITATION TO THE AREA MUCH EARLIER THAN
ORIGINALLY EXPECTED.
FREEZING TEMPS SHOULD SPREAD INTO PARTS OF
HOUSTON...GRIMES...AND WASHINGTON COUNTIES BY MIDNIGHT. THE GOOD
NEWS IS WHATEVER PRECIP FALLS TONIGHT WILL BE VERY LIGHT...GENERATED
MOSTLY FROM 850 MB WARM ADVECTION OVERRIDING THE SHALLOW COLD AIR
AT THE SURFACE. GIVEN THE WARM GROUND CONDITIONS...ANY TRAVEL
IMPACTS SHOULD BE CONFINED TO EXPOSED ELEVATED ROADWAYS LIKE
BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES. WILL ISSUE A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR
THOSE COUNTIES THAT HAVE THE GREATEST RISK FOR ICE ACCUMULATION
OVERNIGHT. FREEZING TEMPS WILL BE POSSIBLE FURTHER SOUTH OF THE
ADVISORY AREA BY THAT POINT THE PRECIP SHOULD BE ENDING. EVENING
SHIFT CAN MAKE ANY NECESSARY ADJUSTMENTS.

STRONG COLD ADVECTION WILL CONTINUE THURSDAY MORNING AND MANY
LOCATIONS MAY SEE THEIR LOW TEMPS OCCUR MID TO LATE MORNING.
AS
THURSDAY NIGHT WILL BE THE COLDEST NIGHT OF THE SEASON SO FAR.
CURRENT INDICATIONS ARE THAT NORTHERN COUNTIES OF SE TX COULD SEE
SUBFREEZING TEMPS FOR 15 TO 17 HOURS WITH CENTRAL ZONES 12 TO 15
HOURS
BELOW FREEZING THU NIGHT AND FRI MORNING.
SOUTH OF I-10 THE
SITUATION IS LESS CLEAR AS CLOUD COVER AND STRONGER WINDS MAY
PREVENT IDEAL RADIATIONAL COOLING CONDITIONS FROM OCCURRING. THIS
WILL BE COVERED IN UPDATED HWOHGX.

MODELS SHOW A 500 MB SHORTWAVE CROSSING SE TX FRI NIGHT WHICH WILL
GENERATE ISENTROPIC LIFT OVER THE AREA. IN ADDITION TO SUBSTANTIAL
LOW-MID LEVEL CLOUDS EXPECTED ACROSS ENTIRE CWA...HAVE ADDED SOME
LOW POPS TO THE FORECAST FOR COASTAL AREAS FRI/FRI NIGHT. NEXT
FRONT IS SLATED TO CROSS THE AREA SAT NIGHT FOLLOWED BY ANOTHER
FRONT MON NIGHT AS NORTHERN BRANCH OF THE JET REMAINS ACTIVE.
MODELS NOW INDICATE BOTH OF THESE WILL BE DRY FROPAS.

***Starting to look very interesting. The advisory will be to Houston's NW, but the NWS now says that a little frozen precip. could reach areas even further SE than expected as the precip. is tapering off tomorrow morning. Frz. rain/sleet reaching Houston briefly??? Also a 12+ hr. freeze is expected for all the area north of I-10 tomorrow night! BURRR!!!***[/i][/b]

Yeah, we're now at 27 degrees here in north Austin. No rain though, or sleet, or snow, or ice pellets, or ...

It is pathetic. All precipitation has been in the form of flurries/freezing drizzle/light sleet, and it tends to last for only 5-10 minutes before going back to just cold and overcast.

I don't want freezing temperatures for that long!! I was already planning to wrap my Majesty Palms (they freeze at 26-28) but if it freezes that long, I might lose them!! Grrr!

It looks like a disturbance might move through South and Southeast, Texas Friday night and into Saturday morning. The temperatures will be around the freezing mark for most areas. Any thoughts on this from anyone?

No schnapps in the house, but a little 100% hot damn is in the freezer - might just to have a little later in the evening. ;-)

Precip is off and on again here. What do you guys think? Have we about seen it all?

ABC 13 in Houston has mentioned the possibility of sleet and frz. rain reaching Houston tomorrow morning, but the on air met said that it would probably be too light, and too isolated to cause traffic problems.

I noticed that too. If it goes overcast (or rains) temps will likely hold above freezing Fri nite/Sat AM.

Just heard on Channel 11 in Dallas, that Kristine mentioned the possiblity of 3-5 inches of snow tonight in some places of NTX before it is all over. Said they are watching some things change and that the possibility for more snow is possible.
So who knows what we might wake up to in the morning. The other mets haven't mentioned much but just a trace or so for the rest of the evening. I guess they are not following the same models.
