I wrapped my water heater with a water heater blanket, and now need to make sure my windows are caulked, and door seals are in good shape. My house was cold this morning, but maybe since it was 10 outside, that had something to do with it.
Yeah, that's cold even for DFW. Spent many years up there and never saw the teens.

the 12Z Dec. 10th run of the GFS shows another burst of arctic air coming in just before Christmas and brings snow/sleet/frz. rain to the area on Christmas eve! The only real difference from last year is that the GFS keeps most of the precip. north of south Texas around the Houston area! This is VERY far out, and the GFS will probably flip-flop, but the fact that there is chance is exciting. Just think...2 weeks ago we were talking about the "Chance" of an extreme cold event and winter weather in Texas, and 2 days ago it happened. Lows hit -3 in Amarillo, 9 in Fort Worth and even 16 in Waco. The high in Houston only hit 34-37 on Thursday, and even Brownsville struggled to get out of the 30s that day. Could the GFS be onto something again? Joe Bastardi mentioned the chance of widespread cold between Dec. 20th and Dec. 30th...so this may not be a far-fetched idea.

Let's hope it plays out this way! I was very happy for the folks near the coast last year...but it was very frustrating to see all of those radar echoes on our house at Christmas, only to have it turn out to be only virga. Mind you, I'm not complaining...the thought that snow happened (and could potentially happen for a second year in a row) south of I-20 in Texas is still incredible. It's so fantastic to have it feel like Christmas. Fingers crossed. Hang in there, GFS.

The latest 6Z run (Dec. 11th) now has the arctic air/wintery weather coming in a little earlier. It now shows it arriving on Dec. 20/21st. It still has the same general idea as yesterday though. Looks promising, especially if we begin to see more run-to-run consistancy. It also fits with JBs idea of a widespread cold snap between the 20th and 30th.

Joe Bastardi announced in his latest post that he thinks there will be a SIGNIFICANT snow/ice threat as far south as southern Texas and as far east as Mobile coming up this next weekend into next week. He mentioned that this could rival the Christmas storm last year and that much of the nation east of the rockies could be sent into a "deep freeze" during the week of the 19th. Lots to watch! He was right about the last spell..so there is a good chance he will be right about this one.

How far south in southern Texas? Does this include the Houston area? This is for the weekend before Christmas?

I do not know the specifics, I am just relating what Joe Bastardi is saying. He says that he is worried about snow and ice to south texas this upcoming weekend. He says the storm could be similar to last years christmas storm. So basically, that means that snow would be a threat to Houston, Corpus Christi and even Brownsville. There is still a lot to watch and the specifics will come later, but as of now it looks like there will be at least a risk of an arctic outbreak with the possibility of snow in 7-10 days.

Yes, indeed! I hope that holds true. Having a white Christmas 2 years in a row here would break the record books! Even seeing any snow 2 years in a row on any given day in the winter is extremly rare. I am 29, and it has only snowed here 3 times my whole life. February of 1988, December of 1989, and last Christmas.

Bastardi tends to overblow the cold threat to Texas from this far out. But this system is one to be concerned about.

18Z GFS shows nothing - no cold air at all. The GFS is just about completely clueless with the current pattern. It's best to ignore it. Better to follow the trends of the ECMWF, as it did very well with the past Arctic outbreak. Penn State's E-wall has some good graphics:
Current 12Z EC:

He didn't with this last one and he certainly called last year's South Texas snow right on target. All while the NWS was still worshiping the GFS.

I'm still waiting for Rita to make landfall in Texas.
