And no I have not been sampling any egg nog!

I've heard of sleet with temperatures in the low 50's.

may be what is happening is since the air is so dry (dewpoints in the 20s), the evaporative cooling is causing the sleet? that is my only idea of how it could be happening. OR may be the air right above the surface is below freezing?

it is currently mixed in with a little light rain, but it is still lightly sleeting here in north Houston. Radar shows a few heavier sleet/rain showers heading this way...that may get interesting. The weird thing is that it is 44 degrees here!?!

Sleet when it's that warm isn't unheard of. It's not going to cause any travel problems...

I'm in Conroe and yes, sleet is falling from the sky. Well not anymore but it was 20 minutes ago and it was coming down pretty good. It is below freezing in the upper levels which is why we are getting sleet. It is 42 degrees at the present time. Dewpoints will start rising as the atmosphere moistens up which is supposed to end the threat of sleet. This was a nice unexpected surprise.

yes it was a nice surprise. Sometimes these events happen when you least expect them to. If you would have asked anyone whether they thought it would sleet tonight, they would of course have said no, but then here it is! surprise! this surprise event is making me get my hopes up again for next week...

Oh dear.....

We just went to dinner at Carrabba's on I-45 in The Woodlands and on the way there it was sleeting a bit, mixed with rain. I wondered if I was seeing things (rather hearing things) on the windshield.

When I came home the first thing I wanted to do was come to S2K and post something like:

Oh my God!! Oh my God!! I saw a few sleet pellets that lasted for 2 minutes!! Oh my God!!! Break out the video equipment and cameras!!!!! Call Dr. Frank!!!!!! File a storm report!!!!! Somebody find me a ziploc so I can save some for my future grandkids!!!!! It's like the frozen Yukon outside!!!!!!! Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

I'm joking of course :D Looks like it's already been reported.

The people up north probably think we're all nuts. It's really nothing.

Well, people up north get to see it week after week in the winter. We live in the deep south, so we don't usually see frozen precipitation. My co-worker who is also now a good friend of mine is from Decatur, Illinois. She said she was eating at IHOP last Christmas Eve, when it started sleeting and snowing. She said everyone was freaking out and she just laughed. But, it was our first time seeing snow in 15 years, so what does everyone expect? It very rarely even sleets here.

It's been sleeting a little more in the last few minutes.

I have to admit, it is kinda neat.

I'm just glad it's in the 40's so I don't have to worry about my plants :D

Of course, if I still lived in Dallas, I'd be praying for the temperature to drop so it would ice over.

The OZ GFS is trending warmer. As Air Force Met pointed-out a couple days ago, it looks like the brunt of the cold will be shunted off to the NE.

well the sleet is gradually changing over to an all rain event as dew points rise. It started about 2 hours ago with moslty sleet, then it became a mix of sleet and rain, and now it is mostly rain with just a few pellets of sleet thrown in. I expect that by midnight most areas will be seeing mostly rain. I have noticed that with this latest round of rain/sleet that only a few pellets were visible on my lawn furniture before melting; with the first burst (around 8:30) there were over 30 pellets on one chair when it was done! Well...all good things do come to an end and it was a nice surprise to see tonight. Now lets hold out hope for a more significant event next Tuesday; a little snow would have made tonight even better. We'll see... As for now though, I am happy with what I got. :D

Yeah, but the Euro is still looking cold. Plus the GFS is never good with arctic air until it has already pretty much arrived. Either way, as of tonight I can already say I have seen my wintry precip. for the winter and if the snow/sleet event does not happen next week, I am satified with what I already got. I'll still hold out hope though until all hope is gone.

Yeah, it's doing the same here. This latest patch is definitely mostly rain but I can still hear a few pings thrown in.

I am glad you are happy. I know what it's like. Some years when I lived in Dallas if we had just a tiny bit of freezing drizzle - something - anything - I was happy (some years we were lucky to even get that). Of course I always wanted a blizzard to come charging in, but I would settle for a tiny coat of ice if that's all we could get.

I guess I'm the only one on here that's been hoping against a snowstorm next week. Actually, some snow would be just fine with me (I love it as much as you do, I promise), I just don't want a hard freeze to follow. Seriously, it would be a disaster for my yard. I'm talking a few grand. I'd rather take a road trip to Centerville and see it than have to replace half my plants. It's not worth *that* much to me. Heck, for that kind of money, I could take a ski trip to Colorado.

But I have to admit, tonight's little show was a nice treat. Especially since it was harmless.
