What do you eat on New Years Day?

Here we always cook black-eye peas......of course here in the south it is said to bring you good luck for the year.. :D

I buy the dried ones and soak them, then cook them with either bacon or smoked ham hock......yummy... and this year I am going to make a whole roast chicken with it.....with roast potatoes........usually I make a ham......but we just had ham at my parents for Christmas dinner........so i am burnt on the ham for a while.... :lol:

So what do yall eat?

Yep, gotta have them black-eyed peas! Of course, that
means that you gotta have some cornbread, too. Well,
better throw in some fried potatoes. And, since we're
burned out on ham, too, it'll most likely be barbecued chicken!

Black eyed peas and cornbred, not sure on the meat yet, but maybe just serve over rice, my husband likes it on white rice with stewed tomatoes. I like it with yellow rice and corn bread. My mom used to always put a dime in the peas for good luck, just curious if anyone else has heard of the dime thing?

I've heard of a coin in the peas, O Town, but, I guess that
this is the sanitary generation - you gotta think of all of
the hands that the dime has passed through before making
it to the peas! Then, again - they used to just get that
good 'ole Saturday night bath.... :eek:

I may live in the West but my heart's still in West Texas.....ALL my kinfolk live in Texas and with that said, it's Black Eyed peas, cornbread and ham 8-)

Black-ah'd peas 'n ham...in thanksgiving for General Sherman's troops' ignorance of this plant as a food crop. Them Yankee arsonists dun burnt up mos' ever'thang cept'n black-ayh'd peas an' a few hams, kept out o' harm's way in smokehouses thet looked lahk privees.

In earlier days, I'd have toasted the meal with a double Southern Comfort; nowadays, I tolerate it.

Black-eyed peas and cabbage eaten on new years day guarantee you health and wealth throughout the year! Either that or alot of gas! :sick: :hehe:
