Attn Hou/Galvers! June 1st is rapidly approaching...

#1 Postby Houstonia » Tue May 20, 2003 10:26 am

Shall we meet and eat on Sunday June 1st to usher in the 2003 hurricane season?

I know that there was recently another meeting of the Hou/Galvers, but I thought we could meet on or around June 1st as well. Any interest?

I have some ideas for places. Some of these places I've never been to. Please let me know what you think, or if you know about these places.

You can reach me here or at Houstonia@ev1.net.

I'll be there. :o)

(When was there a recent one? Ack...I missed it?)

IMO, Yaga's is loud and crowded, although we're doing this on a Sunday so it might not be that bad. Also, it's not on the water. I'm okay with that since I live here. But others might want to see the surf.

Shrimp & Stuff is good. One of my best friends, who lives in Ft. Worth, ALWAYS wants to have a meal at S&S when she and her hubby and kids come down to the island to visit. But like Yaga's, S&S isn't anywhere near the water.

Unless they've moved, Hill's is no more. It is now the 2nd Joe's Crab Shack on the island. Face it...Tillman Fertita owns 95% of all waterfront restaurants on this island.

Casey's is good. And on the Seawall. But unless I've just missed seeing it, I don't think there's outdoor seating.

Fisherman's Wharf - haven't tried. But it's on the water and I'm sure there's probably seating out back facing the ship channel.

I've tried to throw out the pros and cons of each. You guys pick. I live here and have the opportunity to go to any of them whenever I want.

Hope to see you guys there!

:o)

We didn't have a recent get together, even though we tried. Just didn't work out.

However we do have plans for several of us to go to the Hurricane Conference in Pasadena on May 28th. It begins at 8am  and ends at noon. If you can, join us! At least some of us will have on Storm2k gear(available at the storm2k store right now!!!)so we will be identifiable. We will also be handing out Storm2k "business cards" to everyone encouraging them to join us here. Should be fun if nothing else. I for one am planning to eat with the group afterward if everyone is able or wants to. We have at least one member coming in from La.

Yay, names I know!

*waves to Houstonia, vbhoutex, and GalvestonDuck*

I'd love to try and make it on the 1st, if kids are welcome... I have a 7 year old little boy who is kind of a permanent fixture. Oh, the joys of being a single parent. :) I can also try and see if my parents could keep him that weekend. Either way, I'd love to come usher in the new season with you guys!

Children are absolutely welcome, as are parents, grannies, cousins and pets!

vbhoutex, would you still be interested in meeting on Sunday? I look for any excuse to come down to Galveston. :-)

I'm thinking towards the idea of Fisherman's Wharf--price dependent. I will call them today and see if they can fax me a menu.

Hi Ticka!

Okay, when did all of you move over here from the GoPBI boards?? :) If Houstonia hadn't x-posted this there, I would never have known y'all had ditched me to come here. ;)

And that makes me feel better that you're bringing your stepdaughter -- my little boy will be thrilled to have someone to play with and talk to. :)

Two almost simultaneous events for Hou/Galvers...

#10 Postby Houstonia » Wed May 21, 2003 1:45 pm

Let's not get confused here everyone!

1) Wednesday May 28 is the Hurricane Awareness Workshop, to be held in Pasadena Texas. Several of us plan to be there, including me.

2) Sunday, June 1st I am trying to plan a get-together at a restaraunt in Galveston. Fisherman's Wharf is WAY too expensive, so I'm crossing that off the list.

Between the two events, I guess that some of us should get to see each other. :-)

need your opinions...

Well, it seems that most everyone is planning on going to the workshop on the Wednesday before June 1st.

Should we cancel the June 1st get-together and just meet at the workshop?

Should we go ahead and arranged to meet and hang out on the afternoon of June 1st anyway, and all who can make it are welcome to attend?

What do you all think?

Houstonia...I wish we could stay for the June 1st meet up, but our kids are flying out of Shreveport the following day, so we can not possibly make it that day. I think we're going to be staying at the Commodore on the Beach in Galveston May 27th, and we would like to meet everyone there the night before. My husband suggested doing a Meet and Greet poolside at the hotel, and everyone bring a munchie and or drink (the hotel provides around the clock juices and cookies). He thinks it'd be fun to do our own thing...anyone make a great queso dip ?? :) I'm also going to post this request at the workshop thread...and possibly OFF TOPIC. Can't wait to see everyone!

At this point I am still planning to go to the conference on Wednesday, unless I have to start work on the 27th. I may have a job offer tomorrow, but I don't want to count the chickens before the eggs hatch!!! My going to the conference depends on whether I am working. My guess is that I would not start work, if I get a job, till June 2 so I am planning to go to the conference and bring my wife to Galveston on Sunday afternoon after church, hopefully.

Furry, the get together tuesday evening sounds wonderful and I think everyone who can do it should. It would be a toughie for me to do unless I do it alone since my wife has to work on Wednesday. I would love for everyone that can to get together for lunch after the conference. What can everyone do?

Conference/Sunday lunch

#14 Postby Houstonia » Fri May 23, 2003 10:04 am

I can't make it to anything the night before the conference, but I may be able to swing lunch afterward.

I will go ahead and keep looking for someplace for us to eat on Sunday though, and will keep y'all informed!

At this point the wife and I and maybe our daughter will be there on the 1st. We have to be at church in the morning as I have to serve at the table and sing in the choir. So what time are we talking meeting Sunday afternoon?

Does anyone remember what time we met last year?

#16 Postby Houstonia » Tue May 27, 2003 10:02 am

Also, I'm having problems finding a decent place to eat on the water--I'm open to suggestions. I have a list of places in an earlier notice. I'm all for Shrimp and More even though they are not on the water. It's good and it's pretty cheap, and I THINK they have a porch out back. It's VERY informal.

Please--any ideas or suggestions?

And again, what time did we meet last year?

I can't make it tomorrow. Too much work to do and a meeting with the boss.

But I'll be there Sunday -- wherever you decide, Houstonia.

Shrimp N Stuff will work for me. And yes, they do have a patio.

If I remember correctly, we met at around 1 or 2 in the afternoon.

Four days!

I'm for Shrimp!

#18 Postby Houstonia » Tue May 27, 2003 4:07 pm

Cross-posting on GoPBI:

Okay, I'm for Shrimp -n- Stuff! Sunday, June 1st at 1:30 p.m. Be there or BE SQUARE!! :-)

Pictures WILL be taken!! :-)

Shrimp -n- Stuff is VERY informal, so don't worry about that. I just talked to the woman who works there and she says that the most expensive thing on the menu is the seafood platter which is $9.89. So, you can see, it's not very expensive. They do have an outdoor patio, and they open at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays.

Here's the info. I'm including a link to the Mapquest directions. Beware: Shrimp & Stuff is on a side street and kind of hard to find.:

Shrimp & Stuff Restaurant
3901 Avenue O
