Well, there was Hurricane Booger, and he scared the nose nuggets out of me.

The lists of hurricane/cyclone names can be found here...none of them seem overly weird to me.

That one was funny. Even if it means "dragon king" in Chinese (I think) our meaning of it makes it funny.

Tropical Storm Knut. I know it is a normal name in Spanish, I think, but it is weird for Americans.

In the early 1980s, in the southwest Indian Ocean basin, there was a Tropical Storm Christ.

Careful

#13 Postby jimvb » Thu Jan 05, 2006 12:46 am

Careful about making fun of these names. They are perfectly normal sounding in China and other places where the names come from, including Tingting.

Also, I believe the Super Typhoon would be Egay, and Knut is not Spanish; in fact, Spanish originally did not have a k and the kn sound is unknown in that language.

My suggestion for a weird name would be Hurricane Godzilla.

But that name doesn't exist.

The WMO wouldn't choose names that sounded weird to people in the areas the storms affected, so we have to look to storms such as Longwang to find 'weird' names to us.

Nope, there was a Super Typhoon Gay in 1989 and 1992. Remember, Gay is a woman's name, although one that has dropped in use due to its slang meaning.

Knut is Scandinavian, I believe. I have heard it pronounced as "noot" and also as "ka-noot".

For Longwang, I think the Chinese pronunciation would be "loong-wong".

The Southwest Indian Ocean Basin tends to have the more "exotic" names.
