More NBC stations drop "The Book Of Daniel"

#1 Postby TexasStooge » Mon Jan 09, 2006 1:00 pm

NEW YORK (AP) - "The Book of Daniel" is losing viewers before it even makes its debut on TV.

Two more NBC affiliates have announced they won't carry the show, which premieres tonight (9 p-m Eastern).

The new drama features an Episcopal priest with a gay son, a promiscuous straight son, a boozy wife and a drug-dealing daughter.

So far, four stations have dropped the show. Stations in Beaumont, Texas, and Meridian, Mississippi, are the latest to say they won't air the show. The NBC affiliates in Little Rock, Arkansas, and Terre Haute, Indiana, had already announced they won't air "Book of Daniel."

A network spokeswoman says those markets account for less than one percent of NBC's national audience.

I'm not surprised at all.

I watched it Friday Night and didn't see what the fuss was about. In terms of content, Desperate Housewives and several other shows are worse.

(That's an old article BTW). The markets are all small...

Censorship is wrong. Those stations should be ashamed of themselves, They are sensoring this show without giving the viewers a chance to judge for themselves.

TV stations choosing to not air a show is not censorship. It's only censorship if it's government mandated.

I wouldn't get too excited. The show will still be aired in each of those markets. Just not on the NBC affiliate. In my opinion, the show looks stupid, but these tv station are likely giving up a ton of revenue in a fruitless effort to hide content from the residents in their area.

Exactly!

Don't get too attached though... it's a limited series so it won't be around long.

I'm not sure where you get that from, but by definition, censorship is not limited to government mandate.

Yes, actually it is. TV stations have no legal or moral obligation to show programming that they deem inappropriate. Thus their chocie to not show that information is not censorship.

?? huh? censorship is the act of a person examining books, plays, etc for the purpose of suppressing parts deemed objectionable on moral, political, or other grounds.

thus, the station is indeed involved in censorship. who are they to determine what i am or not able to watch.

By the government.

TV stations are not obligated, morally or legally, to show anything they don't want to show.

I just want to say that unless you actually watched the show, then why complain?? I understand that some people are up in the air because he speaks to an actor who portrays Jesus. But, did anyone, in the 70s and 80s, blackball "OH GOD"?
I watched the show, just to see what all the ruckus was about....
Okay, so it portrays a Priest having real life issues. Some controversial, but.. hey, isn't that life now as we see and live it???
I love the way they portray Jesus...."why is it so easy to talk to you?"
It is SUPPOSED to be easy to talk to Jesus. And without pointing a finger, he gently encourages. Without judging.
Regardless if a parent is a Priest, a teacher, a senator, or homeless, people today all deal with some of these same issues with their children and family members. Kids selling dope, homosexuality, the list goes on....The mother will Altzhemiers disease.... made me laugh and at the same time, I have seen it. But, no matter your profession, or even your beliefs, it does not make one immune to the same things in life.
I convinced my mother in law to watch it, even though she was outraged when she first heard about. A devout Catholic. She actually LIKED it.
Now, I am not sure if I like it, or it just sorta got me hooked, but I am gonna watch it next week and see.
Hope you all that did watch it will continue to stay open minded. :)

Eric, I liked that one too, although I thought that some of the problems the family had were pretty low key compared to the things I see today.
I never thought of that family as dysfunctional at all. But, truth be told, seems that "most" families have dysfunction of some sort. Or a family deals with dysfunction of close friends or relatives. Seems dysfunction effects all of us, in todays times. I guess that is why this Daniel show has caught my attention.

The promos I saw for this show reminded me instantly of Desperate Housewives - for shock value. Or Arrested Development.

Am I right? I don't plan on watching this show. Have plenty of current shows to keep me busy....

The promo that got me to watch felt just like Desperate Housewives... and it is in a way, but not exactly. I'm not addicted to it instantly like I was with DH.

Brent - same here. Glad someone else saw the comparisons. My family didn't! Sure wish writers would come up with original ideas for shows instead of copying what's currently working!

Oh well......

Believe it or not, I don't watch Desperate Housewives. So I really can't compare the two. Yea I know, I must be out of it. haha But I had no urge to watch some actresses enact my own personal life!!! haha
