Why I keep my bike under 100

#1 Postby j » Fri Jan 20, 2006 3:43 pm

A picture is worth a thousand words.

The Honda rider was traveling at such a "very high speed", his reaction
time was not sufficient enough to avoid this accident. Swedish Police
estimate a speed of ~250 KM/h (155mph) before the bike hit the slow moving car side-on at an intersection. At that speed, they predicted that the rider's reaction time (once the vehicle came into view) wasn't sufficient enough for him to even apply the brakes. The car had two passengers and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them. The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact and landed 10 feet from where the collision took place.

All three involved (two in car and rider) were killed instantly. This
graphic demonstration was placed at the Stockholm Motorcycle Fair by the
Swedish Police and Road Safety Department. The sign above the display
also noted that the rider had only recently obtained his license.

At 250 KM (155 mph) the operator is traveling at 227 feet per second.
With normal reaction time to SEE-DECIDE-REACT of 1.6 seconds the above operator would have traveled over 363 feet while making a decision on what actions to take. In this incident the Swedish police indicate that no actions were taken.

First looking at this thread, I thought it was a regular (pedal) bike.
That would have been amazing (as in shocking) if this hadn't been a motorized bike. Nasty pictures, though.

What a tragic story. Those pictures should be shown in high schools at assemblies. Adults too, but I'm thinking teens and 20 somethings that drive carelessly.

Sad, sad story.......I doubt I could even get my Honda up to 100 MPH (not that this one was going that fast), smallest engine and all. Just not into speeding (7 over, that's about it).

Glad you're a safe driver j.

I somehow doubt NCAP had even tested sending a motorbike into the side of that model at 250kph. Looks like a Golf to me, not sure which model. http://www.euroncap.com/content/safety_ratings/details.php?id1=2&id2=46, , http://www.euroncap.com/content/safety_ratings/details.php?id1=2&id2=196.

Its the one in the last link. A little sportier with shorter windows.
Volkswagen Golf:
Test Scores: Front 13 (81%) Side 18 (100%) Belt Reminder 2 Overall 33 Pedestrian 19 (53%) Child Protection 37 (76%)

Note it's side rating? I don't think anything could have protected against this bike going 155 mph. I know I would never drive anything like that. After having my big ol' convertion van, I feel so safe in it, I would never go that small, they look like a "golf cart". So sad. :(

These pictures make so glad that my youngest son Beau does NOT have his motrcycle now.His bike was stolen off the Navy pier while he was out doing landing qualifications for the pilots on the ship. Never was recovered.
