Yes, because Stan caused flooding over a widespread area. Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador all experienced flooding from Stan.

At least 80 deaths have been directly linked to Hurricane Stan.

Plus, Stan veered off the forecasted path and made landfall much sooner than anticipated. Instead of moving west, Stan veered south.

Stan also made landfall in an area that had not experienced a hurricane landfall in quite some time.

Too many deaths to remain alive.

Not enough death. It takes thousands of death for central America to ask for retirment. Its kind of like Hati.

Cesar caused some of the worst damage ever for a TC in Venezuela. It was retired more for the damage than the deaths

Since the flooding was not "directly" due to Stan (highly suspect, IMO), the name likely wont be and should not be retired

The media has pretty much associated the flooding with Hurricane Stan.

I'm pretty sure a country in Central America (most likely Mexico), will request that Stan be retired.

Should it be? Yes, IMO.

Will it be? No, not even close by typical WMO standards.

The name won't be retired as Derek said. Stan itself did not cause those deaths. I believe it was an interaction with another system that caused this flooding.

How many names over all does everyone think will be retired from last year's list (the standard list that is)? I figure at least six; Denis, Emily, Katrina, Stan, Rita, and Wilma.

I thought that Stan's death toll was closer to 2000? It caused tremendous flooding/mudslides across the region.

NHC determined that Stan itself did not cause the deaths, only 80-100 of the deaths were directly due to Stan. The other deaths were due to Stan interacting with a trough of low-pressure already over the region
