can anyone explain why profit is bad? and can we all post the profit margin of the companies we work for. also, can anyone come up with a way they could sell a gallon a gas for less than exxon does when they have to
a-buy equipment
b-hire staff
c-go through mountains of red tape
d-finally explore for oil
e-find the oil
f-drill for the oil
g-ship the oil
h-pay the market price per arrel which is now 68 bucks
i-refine the oil
j-ship it again through the united states
k-and then sell it

the question i have is how can exxon sell a gallon of gas for such a low price? can anyone say how they could sell it at a lower price?

lets also consider how much exxon produces and gives america.
hundreds of thousands of jobs
funds millions of pensioners
pays shareholders
and i could add lots more.

its easy to be angry at exxon, even though the anger is misplaced and misguided in my opinion

I own my own business and I won't sell anything for less than a 50% profit margin. Any less is not worth my time.

exactly, and if the govt takes exxons profit what would be the result? oil companies would decide its not worth the effort to produce gas, and the people blaming exxon would see long lines, shortages, and much higher prices on a regular basis

I agree 100%. It's easy to complain about profits, but if you shrink them by government fiat you'll also shrink supply as a result, and prices will go UP, not down.

In our consulting business, we shoot for a 15 to 20% profit. By the way, my car died today. I'll be taking the bus to work until the weather gets nice enough to start biking it again.

What you've said is so true. There's also the service companies that the majors sub out to and the service companies charge exhorbant prices. I'm did buoy lettering for a company that is replacing the buoys in the gom that the oil companies use...$30,000 for a buoy??????? There's alot more that goes into the price of gas that most people don't realize.

On the other hand I have Halliburton stock...it's up $50/share from when i recieved it from my dads estate. Think I might sell... :D

Free enterprise does NOT give businesses the right to price gouge, especially on essential goods and services. After Katrina and Rita prices skyrocketed due to the alleged "shortage" and damage to oil producing facilities. Yet profits are at record highs. Hmmm.

A 10% margin does not indicate price gouging.

Ok maybe u are right but if they went any higher than that they would be bringing this country to their knees. The tourism industry will sure take a beating for the simple reason that alot of people cannot afford the gas needed to get to their destinations. More layoffs. But as along the oil companies executives bonuses are good thats all that matters :x
