I doubt there is any verified video from Andrew. Just looking back at Homestead gives an idea.

I seem to remember seeing one from a typhoon that hit Guam in the early 80's possibly...

^^this video claims 120mph winds, but being 45 miles inland from the cat. 3 landfall of Katrina. I would bet winds are more like 95-100mph (Cat. 2)^^

Just to make sure I'm looking at the correct thing, do you mean the 17 second clip? A truck drove by during it.

If so, I'm pretty confident that's not even 95-100mph winds. We saw much worse than that in Jasper during Rita...and Jasper is like 80-90 miles inland. Nobody was out driving in it!

Yeah, I was being nice with that one. The video claimed 120mph, so I figured I would say weak Cat. 2 because I was having a hard time finding Cat. 2 force video. It seemed like I could find a lot of what was Cat. 1 or Cat. 3, but for some reason Cat. 2 was harder to find. If you have a better Cat. 2 video feel free to post it. I would love to see it.

EDIT: After looking at the video again, I would re-estimate that it was only Cat. 1 force. I will re-label it.

The problem is going to be getting that "verified" video. As we have seen, far too many times people estimate what the winds are when in reality it is nowhere even close to what they actually are. You see it in some of the discussions of Katrina and other storms of the last few years.

You just don't guess what the wind speed is, or stick your hand anemometer out the back door to get a measurable wind speed. I'd venture to say that most home based weather stations fail in just a cat1 hurricane.

There is video from Andrew but I doubt it's Cat 5.

The TV Movie that aired 7 or 8 months after Andrew (it occasionally shows up on Lifetime) has actual andrew footage. Check with the miami area TV stations.

^^The guy who put this video on the web is an idiot. He says that there were gusts to 90mph going on while he was outside during Rita, but i've got news for him. Those gusts were only 40-50mph tops! Really shows how people tend to overestimate the wind speeds when they do not have official readings to back them up. Wonder what he will think when he really sees 90mph gusts. lol.^^

I agree about the 90mph gusts. He's nuts. I don't know where he is, but Rita hit overnight, in the dark. It was dark for hours before and after landfall. I can't find any good videos. You couldn't go hang out outside during the peak of it though...geez.

Yeah, I guess he just assumes that 90mph gusts are nothing and that he can wander outside during them. Next time he hears that gusts of 90mph are coming toward him, he'll probably have an outdoor picnic. He'll be quite shocked when he realizes how bad 90mph really is.

Yeah, I could not even imagine being there at landfall. I went through Charley in Orlando and that was bad enough for me; but it was not even close to the sevarity seen in Punta Gorda...I mean they recorded 175mph gusts down there! 175mph! That's insane! I could not even imagine! Also, I learned recently that Charley was upgraded from 145mph at landfall to 150mph. Many people do not realize that Charley was only 6mph away from being America's 5th landfalling Cat. 5 storm...and that (those) video(s) is probably the closest you can find to Cat. 5 type winds.

**all of this is wind damage...no surge in Punta Gorda. Also, as hard as it is to believe...the strongest winds actually did not hit Punta Gorda...they did see 140-173mph gusts...but gusts of 160-180mph occurred on some of the barrier islands before Charley reached mainland, FL (also...the barrier islands took a lot of Charley's surge).**
