Regarding the video of Dennis and without getting into arguments of windspeed..both sustained and gusts....I am quite confident that the winds that I experienced personally at my house appeared notably stronger that the winds that were seen in the video. Not suggesting that I had mega winds higher than anyone else....just more so than this video.

That is very possible. It is also possible that they did not record the strongest winds on video. I think in order for you to have seen cat. 3 winds though, you needed to be right at the coast...and if you were, then yes you probably saw them. If inland from the coast then Cat. 1/2 sounds about right for what you probably saw...may be just stronger Cat. 1/2 winds than what are depicted on their tape.

I am 9-10 miles inland. However the Pensacola Bay system is quite large. We have only a narrow barrier island and the narrow Gulf Breeze peninsula between us and the open gulfwith Garcon Point dividing the bay in half. A similar scenario also occurs with other large bay systems. I wonder it this is a local geographic condition that might allow higher winds to penetrate a little farther inland than might occur otherwise .

That sounds very possible. Since there is little friction to the winds on the bay, it is very possible that you may have seen stronger winds than other places. Usually places in front of large bodies of water will see stronger winds than those in places obscurred by buildings. I would predict that you saw at least strong Cat. 1/weak Cat. 2 winds where you are...but you very well may have seen all the way up to borderline Cat. 2/3 winds for brief periods of time (may be a few minutes during the peak).

brief being the key word. we had hurricane force sustained winds for around an hour I would guess. However if we had any sustained winds above cat 3 it was probably in a 10-15 minute window where they occurred. During that timeframe the wind peaked and was above anything I have personally experienced and definitely higher than sustained winds I saw with Ivan. I am also curious of how high the gusts where. Ultimately regardless of the classification it was an impressive sight to behold.

Having grown up in GB I know the entire area well. After I left my parents lived on East Bay for a long time before heading to Shalimar and Niceville. I think that you more than likely did get some of the top winds with Dennis due to the specific topography you posted about and the fact that Dennis had a compact but intense core and your true proximity to the coast(ie, mostly water between you and the landfall point).

Thought I would add this cool Hurricane Hugo Video. It shows, like the Charley videos, what it is like to go through Cat. 4 force winds:

Does anybody have personal home video footage of storms that they can (and want to) put online? I think it would be cool to see some personal stories (footage) of the storms in your area. I am trying to load some video of my own online right now and hope to have it on here soon.

I did have some really cool video from the peak of Dennis but...and this is a big but....the next day I went out to record the damage to my property for the insurance company and I recorded over the footage of the peak of the storm. I have some from before the eye and after the peak but the footage of the peak is no more. Had one really cool shot of about the top 20 or so feet of a tree that came over the treeline in the woods beside me...about 50 feet in the air....flew over my property which is about 250 feet across and disappeared. I also caught a possible tornado as the winds near my house were blowing left to right while at the far side of my property trees were falling right to left...oh well maybe next time. perhaps some pics or at least links to pics would be cool as well.

I like to have gotten more but about 5 minutes after this video half of my roof blew off. The winds actually got alot worse then this.

Oh, this was shot about 11 miles north of the beach in Gulfport in the orange grove community.

some of that Charley video might have winds pushing 140

remember there was an unconfirmed report of a 173mph gust in Punta gorda and a 159mph gust at Charlotte County airport

thats the closest I've seen to cat 5 video

Three more great BNVN movies.

BTW, the opening scene of the Isabel movie with the Nags Head sign is about 1200 ft to the NNE of my home/business. 160 kph = 100 mph.

I like the part where one of the guys goes body surfing in Kitty Hawk (he was trying for a Darwin award obviously).

I don't know about gearing me up but it does bring back some pretty scary memories and I realize that it will be Hurricane Season again all too soon. Seems like it just ended!!

(not directed toward you)
Despite popular belief, the terror of not knowing whether you will survive the hurricane really isn't all that much fun. The aftermath, the enormous expense and the changes you endure really aren't fun either. JMO though.

But I'll be here, watching...praying.

Great video. Nice 100+mph gusts whipping through during the video is what it looks like. Scary to think it got worse than this. Did the small tree in the front survive?
