Severe Weather In NOLA

#1 Postby LSU2001 » Thu Feb 02, 2006 8:20 am

Apparently there was an outbreak of severe weather in NOLA early this morning associated with the sqall line that moved through in the2:00am to 4:00 am time frame. Local radio here in Baton Rouge is reporting several homes, damaged from katrina, have collapsed and a warehouse near the airport was destroyed. There are other reports of roof damage and window damage. More later as links and video become available.

I had a hunch the severe threat would increase overnight in southern LA, and sure enough it happened. I wouldnt call it an outbreak, though, it was a very isolated event that happened to hit a metropolitan area. If that same tornado occured in the countryside of Nebraska Im sure nobody would be considering it an outbreak...

Word on the news is it was probably a tornado. I know the weather woke me out of a sound sleep.

Kenner, La. (AP) - A violent thunderstorm packing 50-mile-an-hour winds has roared through New Orleans area neighborhoods that are still suffering the effects of Hurricane Katrina.

While no serious injuries have been reported, roofs have been torn apart and utility poles knocked down. At least one house that was damaged by the hurricane has now collapsed.

Authorities say a state police communications tower also fell across a roadway. The storm ripped part of a roof off Louis Armstrong International Airport, then hit the suburb of Kenner before slamming into the Lakefront area of New Orleans.

At the airport, a jetway used to load passengers also was ripped away and slammed into another jetway. The airport is on emergency power and passenger service is grounded.

Two twisters hit parts of New Orleans

Updated: 11:16 a.m. ET Feb. 2, 2006
KENNER, La. - Two tornadoes early Thursday tore through New Orleans neighborhoods that were hit hard by Hurricane Katrina just five months earlier, collapsing at least one previously damaged house and battering the airport, authorities said.

Roofs were ripped off and utility poles came down, but no serious injuries were reported.

“Don’t ever ask the question, ‘What else could happen?”’ said Marcia Paul Leoni, a mortgage banker who was surveying the new damage to her Katrina-flooded home.

2 tornadoes strike New Orleans
Last Updated Thu, 02 Feb 2006 11:26:46 EST
CBC News
Several neighbourhoods of New Orleans heavily damaged by hurricane Katrina suffered a new blow from nature early Thursday as a pair of tornadoes hit.

The system of thunderstorms and funnel clouds moved across the Louisiana city in the early morning, cutting off power at Louis Armstrong International Airport, tearing off roofs and causing at least one house to collapse.

Two tornadoes blew out windows, and toppled some utility poles and at least one radio tower when they struck at around 2:30 a.m. local time.

One of the tornadoes made a direct hit on the airport. It flipped over luggage carts and pushed one jet walkway into another.

Flights were grounded as staff tried to evaluate the damage by the light from emergency generators.

Five months ago, New Orleans was devastated by Katrina. It was a Category 4 storm when it slammed into Louisiana and Mississippi on Aug. 29, 2005.

Flooding and storm damage caused levees holding back seawater to break a day later, sending polluted water several metres deep pouring through many regions of New Orleans.

About 1,200 people died and hundreds of thousands were evacuated as a result of the storm.

just recieved this email from TSZack, who lives in that area:
Just wanted to let everyone know I am alive....

That storm was unbelieavable last night. Mike Naso was there with me, just ask him. I have never seen a supercell in person like that.

Widespread damage across the entire Southshore of Lake Pontchatrain. 2 confirmed tornadoes. Now we try to pick-up the pieces again, the hard part is figuring out what damage is what?

Grandpa, who didn't suffer any damage during Katrina except for shingles lost his shed last night.

Recorded wind gusts to 65mph.

Thank God he is O.K. and didnt lose much... :P Stay safe TSZack :D

I was awoken about 4pm by distant thunder. Before I knew it the squal line moved through. The wind was roaring and hail was pinging off the windows and roof. The wind was so strong that it blew rain water under my front door. Vivid lightning with numerous strikes nearby.......MGC

Was awoken 2:20 AM here. The thunder was so loud and so continuous that it was impossible to sleep. Lightning was striking everywhere, winds were at least 40 mph with sheets of rain. A local meteorologist said that this weather event was very unusual for our area. I agree! I have never been through a severe weather event that was like this.
