Name Guessing!!

#1 Postby StormScanWx » Sun Feb 05, 2006 9:46 am

I know we're still a month and a half away from knowing officially which names will get retired, but what do you think? Will Dennis, Emily & Stan get retired? I think Dennis and Emily will for sure, not so sure about Stan.

Dennis, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma, I think are givens, a couple of others might be on the edge of the oft-cited "bubble".

But Stan killed more people than Katrina in Mexico/Central America. Several thousand died in mudslides/flooding. Dennis would certainly be retired. Possibly Emily. I'm pretty sure Emily will be upgraded to a Cat 5 when the report comes out. Caused a lot of damage in the northern Yucatan and was a pretty bad storm in northern Mexico.

That wasn't Stan alone. I think Dennis, Katrina, Rita and Wilma and may be Emily.

Katrina, Rita, Wilma, Stan (he should be at least) for sure, and maybe Dennis, and Emily.

What do you mean maybe?Dennis was like one of the worst storms to hit Cuba.On top of that it made landfall as a major hurricane in the U.S.I think Dennis has just as much chance to be retired as Katrina and Rita do.

Ophelia caused millions of dollars in damage, but it won't be retired IMO.

As far as retiring Greek names, that's a good chance that we won't be using the Greek alphabet anymore. I think we will start using a back-up list - same names for all years that go beyond the standard list. If any of those names are retired, then it wouldn't be a problem replacing one.

This is from the FAQ:

At the present time there is no provision for retiring any of the Greek alphabet names, should one be so terrible as to be excluded.

So, I don't think that any greek storm will be retired.

Stan is still in the air, but the rest (KATRINA, WILMA, RITA, DENNIS, & EMILY) have all the qualifitions to be retired.

I should think Stan will be retired for what it did, Katrina obviously for New Orleans, Rita is a definate yes, Wilma for what it did to Cancun and also Florida, Dennis for the mess it made on Cuba, Emily possibly though that one for me is as uncertain as Stan.

As for greek names, I'm sure thats true but if one ever did a Katrina, bet your bottom dollar that possibly power from up-top ensures its never used again...hopefully we'll never get to that situation though

I only meant that compared to the other storms I mentioned that hit the mainland (Katrina, Rita and Wilma) Dennis did seem to be a bit of a dud. I do not agree with this perception, but many do (due in large part to media reports).

We'll never use the Greek alphabet to name storms again:

New list of hurricane names?

In the North and Central America and Caribbean regions, hurricane names are chosen by representatives of WMO’s Hurricane Committee, composed of 26 Member countries. Names are retired and replaced when a storm causes large loss of life or property.

For the first time since Atlantic hurricanes were given names in 1953, all 21 names were used up in 2005. The Greek alphabet had long been the designated backup list but had never before been used.

When the Committee next meets, in March 2006, it will decide which names to retire and their replacements and will agree on a new back-up list.

Saying Stan wasn't responsible for all those deaths is like suggesting that the weather system associated with Stan was responsible for all of them - a catastrophic rain event that just happened to coincide with a hurricane and a volcano. That's like saying Floyd was only a bad storm because of the cold front that allowed it to swallow up the entire East Coast with 30" of rainfall.

Anyway, I think all 6 big ones will be retired.
