Wow Duckie, you're so much more generous than I could be. But that does speak volumes for your character. I'm glad you could put aside your differences and see your family and Grandfather this last Christmas. And no wonder you feel so strongly about abuse. Same as Dennis. It hits really close to home for you both - I'm so sorry for that, I have to add.

Mostly, I'm sorry you lost a family member you obviously cared about even though he did have his faults, as someone pointed out.

My sympathies go out to you and yours right now.

Mary

I am so sorry about your granddaddy. I know the feeling of losing your grandfather and loving him while at the same time not liking what he did to your love ones. It is hard but your post describes how much you love him.

Shawn...that you can assign love an admiration to your granddad through all his faults and weaknesses is a tribute to what he left behind...and a tribute to your own character.

It is not hard to find bigotry in those of his vintage as it was real, acceptable, and even encouraged in their youth. I believe in that realm we really have come a long way over the years. I watch my grandkids play with kids of other colors, faiths, and ethnic background, and they see nothing but a friend who wants to play with them.

Alcoholism is a terrible disease with side-effects that can destroy families and relationships. It saddens me to see otherwise good and strong and insightful people come to covet alcohol and drugs as partners through life. They are not partners at all, but thieves from the dark side who simply walk along with you and take advantage of our frailties...even among stone-hardened veterans and the most creative of souls.

I am glad you got to be with him in December. Those are visits we should all make.

My own father, now approaching 91, is struggling this winter as is Kathy's dad. We are going to make a rare winter visit to Illinois in two weeks to chat and laugh and remember, too.

God bless you Duckie. Grandy gave you one more thing, too. He gave you a beautiful perspective on life and the world, and although you have struggles of your own as we all do, it's obvious this is a better place with you a part of it.

Sorry to hear about your loss...:( At least you got to know your grandfather for awhile, mine passed on in 2001, and I was 11 at the time, so I never really got to know him...:(

My grandfather passed on in 1989 when I was an adult with my three kids. So my children at least got to know their great-grandfather. My great grandfather died when I was about 4 and I never got to know him like my kids knew their greatgrandfather. So be glad you had the time you had with him.

Shawn, I'm so sorry for your loss. What a challenging relationship. Sounds like you made your peace with him and have some good memories to hold on to and love.

Shawn, when I read your words, I feel so sorry for all of those that can't put their true feelings into type. You hold back nothing and express all your impressions and passions so clearly and, well, beautifully. You have a way of releasing all of your emotions and yet making us all feel like we are a part of your life. Thank you.
