I told my sister to throw a snow ball for me if they get some snow in Birmingham. It looks iffy though.

Yeah... I'm in about the same situation(about midway between Birmingham and Atlanta). Think there could be enough to cover the ground in spots tomorrow from leftover snow showers.

I think Memphis will get at least 6-8 inches out of this.

Its 52 degrees in Birmingham...no WAY they are getting snow, let alone enough to cover the ground or make snowballs out of.

While it looks rather dubious to you up in MN....obviously you've never been here in the deep south for winter.

We can have 60 degree days right up to the day before a good sized storm....and when the storm moves through, the temps drop really fast and if there's enough moisture to go with the cold, the snow piles up and eventually sticks.

It's not a stretch at all to think B'Ham could be 52 today, and get snow tomorrow. Not at all.

Lived in Atlanta since '68 and I've seen it many times.

Oh yeah?

On the afternoon of December 16, 2000, an F4 tornado ripped across Tuscaloosa, AL. It reached 70 degrees in Birmingham that day. The next morning there was snow on the ground across North and Central Alabama, including Birmingham.

The week of SS '93 is another good example. Go back and look at the temps for that week. It was rather spring-like...and Friday came and WHAM. Massive dumpage.

It happens...

Not saying its a sure thing for B'Ham or Atlanta this weekend, but it's certainly not completely out of the question if you go by historical data.

I meant for THIS PARTICULAR EVENT, not in all history or in any form of generalization. Actually, here in MN our temperature drops/extremes are even greater than those in Alabama, since we're both close to canada and far south enough to get really warm plains/southwest warmth. It'll be 89 one day and 48 the next, I see it all the time. I was just saying that with this particular storm the cooling dynamics arent as impressive since the thing isnt too strong right now. We'd be talking storm of the century strength if it went from 52 degrees to 33 or 34 and heavy snow in just a few hours, with enough mositure left over for heavy snow.

:roflmao:

You've never experienced winter in the south. That is obvious.

Did you not read Brent's comments about the December 16, 2000 storm? 70 and tornadoes one day, next morning snow...

It probably won't happen with this weekend's storm...but the December 16, 2000 storm was certainly NOT "Storm of the Century" calibre....and yet...it snowed.

Puhleeze don't insult our intelligence. We know our local weather patterns...we've lived it.

I feel like Birmingham has a pretty good chance of getting a dusting late tonight. Hopefully, in my case, we can get a little piece of that UL energy over in TX to rotate through here and give us a few flurries later tomorrow. New Orleans and Mobile NWS also says there may be enough moisture left trapped under the colder air to squeeze out a few flurries. I know it's a slim shot and I've learned to not get my hopes up too high, but it does happen from time to time.

Yeah, but you didnt read my comment clearly. I said it would be SoTC strength if it was 52 and then turned over to snow WITH SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATIONS. I dont consider a sloppy dusting to be significant snowfall, and thats what happened the night of december 16 isnt it? Also, the sypnotic setup was entirely different. The december 16 event was with an arctic front and the snow was from leftover mositure being squeezed out, this is just a low moving along the gulf coast...pretty different. And like i said before since alabama isnt far enough north of the low too much warm air is in place and WILL REMAIN IN PLACE until the low pulls away and the cold air moves in, at which point alabama will be in an unfavorable position for significant snow, if any.

Hey, that's my pic! Its cool though...

But yeah, we were getting 2" by that time, I had a NWS friend of mine in Bartlett who was reporting similar accumulations vs. me the entire time. I am just west of Bartlett.

Total here was probably 4 to 4 and a half inches, but some did melt, we have just under 4" on the ground right now. Very wet, very heavy, but very beautiful.

I guess you know where I got it from. I think you have one of the best pics that I've seen.

My kids are in la-la land. They could not wait to get out this morning.
I am exhausted from dressing and undressing them. It's a chore!
