Saturday thru Monday Southern Winter Storm Thread
With yet another threat for winter precip for the Southern States from Saturday thru Monday, I have started a much needed new thread. Charlotte calling for winter precip from Mid Saturday thru Presidents day!! It will be several impulses moving along a stalled front. This could be very interesting for many of us that are wishing for some winter precip. All are encouraged to post, enjoy and be safe, there will be a lot of ice for many.

ya
i think charlotte will get some good freezing rain/sleet out of this and parts of tennesee and arkansas and extreme northern miss.. i dont think atlanta or birmingham will though.. this front is more of a blue norther...atlanta and birmingham are a little too far south and especcially east.. i think there will be a stripe of severe icing from Dallas, Texas to Charlotte,NC.... this could be a historical ice storm

I remember when I lived in Raleigh from 99'-01' it seemed like we would get snow and ice commonly in the winter...in fact in Jan. 2000 I can remember 3-5 good storms (one of which was the 2 foot snowfall on the 25th). I also remember getting 2-3" just before Thanksgiving in 2000 and I think it was 2001 when it snowed in April. Looks like times have changed since I lived there..I have not heard of too many big snow events in Raleigh since I left. Hopefully you guys will get some winter weather this weekend!Pi Master wrote:Please please please get cold enough in Raleigh....![]()

Oddly, the NWS Huntsville AL office is downplaying potential ice. I say oddly because Northern Mississippi, Southern TN, and even North GA NWS offices are all predicting at least the possibility of significant icing. Birmingham is forecasting potential ice in the northern section of their CWA, too!
Everything I'm seeing on NWS discussions and in the models is showing an increasing *possibility* of a significant, if not historical, storm on the way. In the "stripe" mentioned earlier on this thread from DFW to Charlotte.

How about SC?
In Columbia, SC in 2003, we got a damaging ice storm where we lost power for 3 days. A couple of days leading up to the storm, all forecasters did not call for it to get as cold as it did. I believe the cold air will penetrate more south than what they are calling for at the moment. I think this could be a significant winter weather event!

NWS Charlotte sticking to their guns quoting good model agreement for a winter scenrio to play out over the CWFA. Temps down a bit on the forecast which moves the Upstate of SC more into the action as well. Looks to be wintry. Ice may become big concern here. Look for winter products to come out today, probably with the next shift.

NWS Asheville is calling for a mixed bag through next Tuesday (snow, sleet, and freezing rain). Locals know that in an ice event (we've seen this once this winter already), the foothills get hit harder than the mountains due to CAD. So once again, the area from Greenville, S.C. > Tryon > Rutherfordton > Morganton/Marion > Lenoir, etc will likely be the hardest hit if there's prolonged icing.

Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 2:20 PM EST on February 17, 2006
Wintry weather possible Saturday and again on Monday
A strong cold front will drop southeast through central North
Carolina this evening and bring dramatically colder air for the
weekend. As the front stalls to our south... moisture from the
southwest will collide with the colder air... leading to a chance
of wintry weather Saturday over much of the Piedmont and northern coastal plain.
Light rain is expected to begin in the western Piedmont shortly
after daybreak then spread quickly east. The rain will likely mix
with snow in the northernmost counties near the Virginia border
and may mix with or change briefly to light snow father south in
the Piedmont before ending in the afternoon. Most snow is expected
to melt on contact because of the warm ground temperatures. Accumulations up to a half inch on grassy areas are possible over the far
northern Piedmont... including places like Winston-Salem...
Roxboro... and Oxford.
A lull in the precipitation is expected late Saturday night
through Sunday... then more precipitation will develop late Sunday
night into Monday. The atmosphere and ground will be colder and
this means there will be a better chance of snow accumulations...
possibly an inch or two... across central North Carolina.
However... uncertainty remains concerning the amount of precipitation
that may fall.
People are advised to keep a close watch on the forecasts and
weather conditions throughout the weekend.
