Max Mayfield says that 2006 could be WORSE than 2005!!!!!

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

That statement can not be supported scientifically. We could have had 50 hurricanes and 10 Cat 5's in the year 1137 A.D./C.E. but we would not know it because records were not kept.

Never assume anything nor make a declaration like that, please.

Mother Nature has a way of making all of us look foolish.

I believe the the original post was in reference to within OUR collective memories. I don't see Destruction5 claiming anything about past seasons. They seem to be of the opinion that within "OUR" lifetime there will be no season to exceed 2005. While the probability that there could be another one, the statement by many well-versed professional meteorologists that this was a once in a 200 plus year season seems to make that conclusion a reasonable one--albeit anything is possible.

And yes, Mother Nature has, can, and in all likelihood will continue to make us look foolish betimes.

I personally think this season will surpass 2005, or at the very least roughly tie it. It is only some trend indicators, and my gut feeling that tells me so. However these same type of indicators, and my hunch, told me that 2005 would be the most active season since 1995, and perhaps even more so.

Take it for what it is worth.

I fully respect your feelings on the possibilities, Hybridstorm; but I just have a gut feeling that 2006 will be much less than that of 2005. (A disappointment to some--sadly because "cheering" for a horible season is beyond my comprehesion) At least I dearly hope it is.

True. Scientifically it can't be supported however the ODDS are we won't see anything close to 05 #'s. Thats the reality of it all. I still think 17/9/4 for 06 but nothing close to 05. That said, those are still high numbers compared to most seasons.

I don't think anyone, at least in this thread, will be disappointed in not surpassing 2005 #'s. I know I won't be....

I was speaking in terms of the general spectator mentality of a lot of folks--no one in here, and we certainly agree on this one... I won't be either... in fact I'm praying it won't even remotely be near it.

True, but I stick by my feeling. It has yet to do me wrong in regards to weather patterns (not just tropical cyclones). We will see though. I pray I'm wrong, I just do not think I will be.

one thing to consider when calculating the average number of storms in a year.

DONT USE 10. The mean for the last 10 years is actually 15, 50% above the "average". 10 years may be enough to have some statistical significance
