Record breaking in the since of smashing low temp records rather they be daily or all time.

Oh I'm sure that's just for the date, not even for the month. During the Feb '89 freeze Houston was below freezing for over 3 days straight. It is awfully late in the year though for such cold highs

Just curious for those of us that were near freezing (33-36), would it have been cold enough to kill the mosquitos?

I think you need to have a hard freeze to kill the skeeters.

And more recently in January 1997, over here in Beaumont and even closer to the coast in Nederland and Port Arthur, we were below freezing for several days and without power for nearly a week due to the only real Ice Storm I've ever seen. I stayed bundled up like crazy. You couldn't shower. You practically froze to death just trying to go to the bathroom!
The only heat we had in my rented house was a small grill. We'd fire it up outside and try to thaw out our hands a little while cooking some of the food that lay in the opened freezer door. I remember feeling like my feet were going to just break off...man, was it miserable!!

1/4 inch of ice was on some surfaces and 1 inch on others. The effects of the storm were quite devastating, something you don't really expect way down here in the winter. Several million dollars in damage.

My parents had a fireplace at the time, but I couldn't drive to get there, or anywhere for that matter. Everyone was just stuck. Anyway, it wouldn't be quite as bad for me now, since I do have a fireplace. At least I'd have some heat! That was a miserable time...I'm glad we didn't get anything close to that.

Cold does not kill mosquitos. Mosquitos are ferocious during the summer in Alaska, so a light freeze here will not impact them much. They just go inactive in the cold. Dry weather has the best impact on lowering mosquito populations.

The mosquitos here wear jackets in the winter :D While they are most seen in the late summer and fall they never really go away.

Yes, that is just the coldest max temp. for the date (Feb. 19). It just shows that it is rare for Houston to see 30s for highs during the later half of February. There have been many many colder days than that...in fact, back in the 1800s we may not have gotten out of the TEENS on a few days! Also, during that 1989 cold snap you mentioned..highs only in the 20s were seen in Houston for a day or two! Also, the longest freeze for Houston was 5 days long back in 1951! During that freeze...areas of the city also saw a 1-2" freezing rain storm!

North Texas needs the rain - I'm tired of the red flag warning days and not being able to grill outside. . . . We MIGHT even just have a chance if we can get some rain this week.

Headed down to San Antonio a couple of weekends ago and the lakes/creeks/rivers are in horrible shape. We need RAIN WATER!! They had even requested that we not wash cars, etc. due to the drought. All the ponds dried up and the fish died. :-( Lakes around here are very low.

C'mon Rain!!!
