This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Yep... any storm hitting in the Tampa Bay area would be catastrophic.

By the way, windycity, did you see how Palm Beach and Broward counties have not seen a major from the east in over 40 years?

Yep... I meant that if a storm (notably a major hurricane) hits Florida this year, which area of Florida would most likely be hit or impacted.

I'm confused by the poll ? The most numerable would have to be Tampa, St Pete area and the most likely to get hit would have to be the Keys or Panhandle area.

I have no idea. I'm not even going to vote. Tampa is sheltered. The Keys are in between two large landmasses so they are in a bit of a "safer zone". Miami as Derek mentioned is not too favorable for a hurricane to hit. I guess most likely to be hit would be FL Panhandle but they are in the NGOM.

I predict that the worst hit area in Fl this season is between Fort Pierce and Jacksonville...and also between Tallahassee and Tampa.

I had said Miami from the east is not very vulnerable, the south or SW is a far different story, as shpwn by Wilma, same true for the Keys

I have to say Miami to Hollywood, because a storm like Andrew could always happen again whether it happens next year or in 100 years

I picked Miami north to Hollywood due to its Population density and the explosion of commercialization on the coast. There is the danger of Castrophic damage and loss of life if a Hurricane struck under the worst conditions.

I agree though that one can argue that Tampa now has the dubious distinction of being the ticking timebomb for a major Hurricane related disaster on a vulnerable US City since last years Katrina event hitting near N.O. A storm approaching as Charley did coming up the mouth of Tampa Bay could be devastating.

From the Tampa Tribune

A direct hit by a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 131 to 155 miles per hour could seriously damage many of the downtown office buildings, wreaking the kind of havoc on Tampa as Charley did on Punta Gorda last year, Gispert said. Tides could rise to 22 feet, enough to flood downtown, Tampa International Airport and other areas up to 2 miles inland.

I knew it would be low, but Cedar Key to Venice without question. The devestation that a storm would cause anywhere from Sarasota to Clearwater is unimaginable.
