Here are some interesting numbers from this winter taken at Hooks airport in Tomball, TX (NW Houston):

(This data starts on Dec. 1st, 2005 and ends on Feb. 23rd, 2006)

Number of freezes* = 11
Coldest High = 36F (December 8th)
Coldest Low = 27F (February 12th)
Number of days with highs below 50F = 7
Number of days over 80F = 6
Snowfall = 0"
Rainfall = 7.20"

*There were also many 33-35F mornings too that do not officially count as freezes.

Long Range Ensembles...

Aggiecutter, I have appreciated your posts and your keen observations with the ensembles. Thanks for all of that!

I have enjoyed it as well, and also your insight Portastorm.

Now, onto the Spring storm season. I hope it's an active one, seems like we haven't had too much luck in recent years here in TX. Before we know it, we'll be charting the SSTs in the Gulf and switching forums :D

You too, Jschlitz! I have enjoyed our many discourses. Also have appreciated my pal on the coast, CCtxhurricanewatcher, and posts from gboudx, Johnny, and extremeweatherguy and yes, even Tyler! Of course, couldn't do without the expert analyses from Air Force Met, Jeff, Wxman22, and DonSutherland.

You are right ... won't be too long before we're talking SSTs, tropical waves, and trough splitting in the Gulf!

Yea it's been fun chatting with you too.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get a good cold front during spring break which is the second full week of March for most colleges and school districts in Texas. Seems like when I was in college and high school we had a few spring breaks where we had a few days in them that were cool and damp.

I think winter is done too... I went to Home Depot today and bought some plants... So you watch we are going to get another freeze or something and kill what I just got... I also had the car washed today too... Is that a double whammy?? Go figure.... Keep up all the good work, and now onto stormy spring weather!

CaptinCrunch wrote:For just about everyone South of Waco winter is pretty much over for you. For the rest of us here in NTX and the Panhandel one or two more freezes my still be instore, as gboudx stated March 14 is the average date for a last freeze.

Today we finally climbed above 50 for the first time since last Thursday, which is good because I'm down to the last of the firewood, just enough for 1 or 2 more chilly nights. :cry:

hey capn.. yea winter is over in North Texas more like at the end of March... i remember being in Ft.worth watching it snow on Easter ,March 28,2005 last yr.. na, give it till the end of march, after that its hello spring in april but march can be tricky for North Texas and especially west texas and the panhandle ya know... with those big snow storms coming out of the New Mexico Mountains.... and the panhandle of Texas will see probably see more like 15-25 more freezes ya DFW will see a few more, i hope you didnt mean 1 or 2 more for the panhandle, that is way off target.... more like 15-25 but the panhandle can see huge snowstorms in march, april and early may, dont you remember those 2 blizzards last yr in march one was a half a foot and the other they got like 12 inches of snow? and the 3 inches of snow they Amarillo got in early May :lol:

try like 20-40 more freezes for the panhandle of Texas.. accuweather is forcasting snow sleet and freezing rain for Amarillo from March 8th thru the 10th... i counted 9 nights below freezing for amarillo in the 15 day forecast and like 5 for Dallas/fort worth below freezing from march 6th thru the 11th.. winters not over yet for north/west, and the panhandle of Texas.... there will be some more cold air and wintry precipitation drift into the area,(especially the Panhandle of Texas) from New Mexico and southern Colorado in march and april :D
