2009 Movie Rentals.....rate 'em!

#1 Postby Miss Mary » Sat Feb 25, 2006 10:15 am

Couldn't find an old movie rental topic so I thought it's still almost a new year. Let's start a topic where members can post about a recent movie rental and rate it - good or bad. So the rest of us know what the heck we're doing at our local Blockbuster! Unless I do my homework, that new release wall is a sea of uncertainties! Thanks.

I'll start.

Elizabethtown - Excellent! We all loved this movie. Here's a link, if you want to read about it:

Crash is one of the best movies I've seen in a LONG time -- it's nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars so see it before then!

Crash was a very good movie, but it left me feeling sad.

Waiting - Good but not great. Very funny parts but crude humor. Strong language. Ended quickly, I wasn't ready for the ending either, since one aspect of the story was left unanswered. This is a movie where events take place all in one day (Breakfast Club, Dazed & Confused, etc.). Makes us not want to eat out in a restaurant for a while OR never, ever send food back to the kitchen!!!!!

Poseidon Adventure 2005 (remake) - Fair. Makes me want to watch the original again. New movie has a terrorist plot as part of the story. The original didn't have that! It was flipped over by a tidal wave! Typical stories - celebrations, marriage in turmoil, cheating spouse, etc. All in all - a huge disappointment. Don't waste your money.

That's it for our movie rentals for a while. Back to work/school routines.....

Waiting and Saw 2. Best movies I've seen so far this year.

That's what I read about Waiting - viewers either loved it or hated it. We were really in the middle. I did laugh at almost all scenes, but the returned plate of food part - gross-gross! Makes ya wonder if that really goes on behind the scenes!

Stay away from Lords of War. I get tired just thinking about it! Long and boring. Almost as bad as that Russell Crowe sea movie. what was it, Lord and Commander or something like that. OMG, how awful!

The Weather Man - very good movie.

Different though. Very little to do with weather. Reminded me of Nicholas Cage's movie, The Family Man. There's a clear message - don't let your family slip away. Remember to appreciate your loved ones or they will slip away from you. This is not a comedy although there are a few moments that are comical. He's always getting food thrown at him. "Hey Weather Man" and along comes a Frosty or something. His dad doesn't understand him, at all. His kids are slipping away. And he regrets divorcing his wife. Brief nudity (15 seconds), strong language, strong sexual references. I wouldn't watch it with a kid younger than 14.

I did my homework on this movie, I knew there was going to be a clear message - appreciate your loved ones. Don't take them for granted. So I'm glad we rented it.

But I have one question - are there any highly paid on camera weathermen/women that are NOT Meteorologists? On the big networks? I was expecting the character to be a Met.

Ditto! (How often do we agree? )

Too predictable, as well as long and boring.

I've rented Flightplan, Elizabethtown, and North Country for the weekend (home sick with a tummy bug).

Shawn - you're going to like Elizabethtown! The word I would choose to describe it is - sweet. That sounds corny but it's true. Especially the last 15 minutes.

A movie we've never watched is The Matrix. Yes, from 1990! I had a newborn back then and no time to myself. When I rented The Weather Man, I rented it too. We have surround sound and it's apparently perfect for that feature. The Matrix has intrigued me b/c anyone who has seen it (almost everyone I know) won't reveal what it's about. All they keep saying is this - you HAVE to see it! Since I love sci-fi, it's a no brainer.

I want to see PROOF. It looks really good.

I thought CRASH was good but sad and disturbing.

SAW 2 was great but I liked the first one better.

I think I'll pass on Crash.

Ever since I painstakingly got thru Lost in Translation, I can no longe watch any Bill Murray movie. Is Crash anything like LIT? Or the type movies Bill Murray is into making these days?

I prefer light hearted comedies. Which are becoming harder and harder to find!

To digress a moment to answer a question, yes there ARE big time TV weatherpeople who are not Mets.

We're into the Matrix trilogy right now. Yeah, I know they're not new movies - LOL! And have only taken us 15 years to see!!!! Pretty cool, similarities to Revenge of the Sith I noticed. Mmmm, did George Lucas copy some of the Matrix? I wonder......the chosen one, Neo having dreams of Trinity dying in the second movie? At least now some of what I heard about the ROTS makes sense now, when fans would talk about the Matrix.
