Florida Hurricane Statistics: Active Vs. Non-Active Periods

Statistics for FL peninsula (does not include panhandle). Please take note how lucky we have been the last 43 years (excluding the 2004 and 2005 seasons).

1921 - 1960 (very active)

-26 hurricanes hit FL
-That equals roughly 1 hurricane appx every other year
-Hit frequency of 65%
-nearly 58% of those hurricanes hit Southeast FL (Fort Pierce to Key West)
-11 major hurricanes :eek:

1961 - 2003 (not very active)

-12 hurricanes hit FL
-That equals roughly 1 hurricane appx every 4 years.
-Hit frequency of only 28%
-only 2 major hurricanes (let me repeat, only 2 major)

2004-2005 (extremely active)

-5 hurricanes
-In the past 2 years we have nearly half the total hurricanes for 43 years.
That is scary.

We are entering an era that is even more active than 1921-1960 I'm afraid based on data from 2004-2005

there may have been some sub-periods within the major periods but I did not document those. It would be an interesting excerise to investigate those sub-periods.

Well, I'm kinda a "Floridian" since my wife's already there, with me to follow shortly.... :wink:

Anyway, does anyone know when was the last year that the state of Florida DID NOT come under a tropical watch or warning - be it storm or hurricane?

in order to consider it an very active period should it occur over 5 or more years before we know it's definitely an active period. I will give you credit on the research but 2004 and 2005 have been active but, maybe we should wait a couple years before we decide this is really an active period?

technically this "active" period started back in the mid to late 90s. If you look at the records, you would see this to be true. 2004 and 2005 have been only the first 2 years of the "peak" of the active period which we are now entering.

Actually that was an extremely active period in S. Florida, with three Cat 4 landfalls invof Ft. Lauderdale from 1945-1949.
