A March, April, or May Storm?

#1 Postby gatorcane » Wed Mar 08, 2006 4:24 pm

It's not likely but entirely possible. Here is some past history. Comment welcome:

March:

-Earliest Hurricane formed in a calendar year: March 6, 1908 Hurricane

April:

-Strongest April tropical storm: Ana 2003 (only April storm), April 20-April 24, 60 mph winds, 994 mb

May:

-Strongest May hurricane: Able 1951 (Category 3), 1908 Hurricane (Catetory ?), Alma 1970 (Cat 1) , Tropical Storm 1933, May 15, 1887 (70mph) & May 17, 1887 (60), earliest two storms active at once. Tropical Storm One, May 22, 1948 (50mph). Tropical Storm One, May 19, 1940.
Earliest Category 3+ hurricane : Hurricane Able, May 15, 1951
(May/June 1825 was a major hurricane also, but there is less information available about it due to the records)

I wonder if theirs any sources to bring up tropical depressions that formed in May. I remember a depression that affected Florida in the early 90's.

I think we're all so keyed up from last year. . . that if June 1st comes and there's not a storm after midnight on that day, we'll go nuts.

I believe there was also a tropical storm on record that affected South Florida in either 1952 or 1953 right around Ground Hog Day.

it is very possible that we won't see any named storms
until August... and that would be great news... here are
some examples...

a minimum pressure of 1004 millibars (29.66 inches);
sustained winds of 59 mph for 5 minutes;
gusts to 68 mph (hurricane force is 74 mph);
tropical storm-force winds above 40 mph for four consecutive hours. Image

Unless of course that system is anything like hurricane Andrew was in that example!!!
I'd have thought its very possible for a TS, esp a hybird type system could form over the next 2 months, will it though, thats another matter.

My guess is we'll see maybe one storm before the actual start of the season, which I believe was the case either last year or the year before. Nothing too terrible to start with. But i'm not too hopeful for an August start as we had in 2004...

I don't know...my feeling is that this will be a more "normal" season, with the majority of the storms confined to the more traditional peaks of a typical season. One or two in June, nothing in July, things will really pop in August and September, then a brief lull to start October, then the second spike mid-late October, 1-2 storms in November.

I think we'll see a T.S form in late May around the Yucatan,possibly affecting the Gulf coast as a weak T.S.

As long as it's not from April 30th to May 7th because that's when I'll be on my Western Caribbean cruise. No rain please and especially no tropical storms!!
