vsby(s) = visibilit(ies)
sws = special weather statement
tw = tornado watch
stw = severe thunderstorm watch
sxns = sections
afd = area forecast discussion
zfp = zone forecast package
avn = aviation (can be used to refer to both a weather model and a weather discussion, the former is now called the GFS, or Global Forecasting System)
GFS = see above
ETA = ??? (I can't remember this one off top
)
NAM = Was the ETA, stands for North American Model I believe; only goes out to 84hrs instead of 240 or 384 hrs like the GFS does
Hrcn = Hurricane
TD = Touchdown (j/k
) It really means Tropical Depression
TS = Tropical Storm
Hur = See Hrcn
MD = (not Doctor
) Mesoscale Discussion, usually issued for the following:
* Heavy rain events over a large area
* Organized strong / severe thunderstorm areas
* Organized heavy snow squalls
* Sometimes for hurricanes
