The brown recluse venom is extremely poisonous, even more potent than that of a rattlesnake. Yet recluse venom causes less disease than a rattlesnake bite because of the small quantities injected into its victims. The venom of the brown recluse is toxic to cells and tissues.

This venom is a collection of enzymes. One of the specific enzymes, once released into the victim’s skin, causes destruction of local cell membranes, which disrupts the integrity of tissues leading to local breakdown of skin, fat, and blood vessels. This process leads to eventual tissue death called necrosis in areas immediately surrounding the bite site.

The venom also induces in its victim an immune response. The victim’s immune system releases inflammatory agents—histamines, cytokines, and interleukins—that signal specific disease-fighting white blood cells to the area of injury. In severe cases, however, these same inflammatory agents can themselves cause injury. These secondary effects of the venom, although extremely rare, can produce these more significant side effects of the spider bite:

Destruction of red blood cells

Low platelet count

Blood clots in capillaries and loss of ability to form clots where needed

Acute renal failure (kidney damage)

Coma

Death

HOLY COW.......Michelle when she worked for the forest service as a Hot Shot had a team member get bit....by the time she got him to the ER, he had a MAJOR heart attack, the guy lived but.............

NOW.....another story, I WILL NOT post the whole story due to it's graffic nature, my step mother, who is a RN and worked at the local hospital had a patient who had used a "wooden outhouse" got bit on the ummmm, uhhhhhh....man parts!

Thanks for the not too much info there Brother. LOL!!

I am not afraid of spiders except the brown recluse.

I read somewhere that there are people who are bitten by this spider, but never know it. It is all how the individual reacts to the venom.

One of my good friends died from a brown recluse spider bite. She went to the ER and they sent her home with some antibiotics. She had a reaction to it and she collapsed. It was terrible! Now if some of you know Singing River Hospital you will know that she was doomed anyway by even going there.

Got bit didn't no it...Looked like little ant bite for about 3 days then all hell broke loose..I got bit on the stomach. About day 5 it looked like a shotgun blast...Went to ER they cut some of the dead skin off and gave me antibiotics...Did the same thing about a week later...See the venom works like gangrene it just all depends on how much venom was put into you....About 3 weeks later it was almost totally healed I knew it was going to be a scar but I got a bunch of them anyway...What I did not know is that the venom had gone into my blood stream and my body was shutting down...When my liver shut down I was on my way to the doctor and my heart failed and I woke up six days later....My liver is ok now but right kidney and heart are beat up... I had to go to Shands Hospital for a few days to work on the blood part they told me that some time the venom may not go into effect for up to 6 weeks...So you could of been bit 6 weeks ago and just now show symptoms...Also most people don't have any pain when bitten because when they bite they actually inject antiseptic so you may not feel it...And almost ever home has one...Just not easy to find because they usally only come out at night....

if it's a boil, salt water compresses work nicely. web md has some great home treatment advice. I had one on my shoulder last week and it's just about gone now.

ice doesnt kill an infection....

it will help to ease swelling but doesnt do anything for infection.

I think your right ...I think they told me to apply the ice because the venom wont spead if a ice pack is placed on it...

i dont recommend it for the faint of heart (and it isnt advised by medical professionals either), but i lanced the boil on my shoulder. i sure am glad no one else was in the house. (It was gross, too.) they would have heard an earful. i even cried it hurt so bad. But after some peroxide, some antibiotic ointment, and antibiotic bandaids, it's almost as good as new.

man...just a couple weeks ago i had a boil lanced by the doc, still recovering, doc said it had been there for several weeks, yet I had only noticed it a few days prior to my visit...he put 8" of packing in it...was hurting so bad I could hardly sit and couldnt lay down on it, so I lost several hours of sleep due to it...he said they see that stuff all the time, but mine was the worst he had seen for awhile. Doc said those things are ticking time bombs, the sooner they are taken care of the better, lancing didnt hurt to bad, the packing...OMG...I "almost" cried...more of a whimper though...

yep, those things have to be taken care of. if a staph infection gets in the bloodstream, it's a lot more unpleasant than what's encountered when the boil is lanced....

Speaking of bed bugs, the count is growing in Fort Worth.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fort Worth sees bed bug outbreak

By YOLANDA WALKER / WFAA ABC 8

FORT WORTH, Texas - Millette King says she and her family have been sleeping with the enemy.

Apparently, bed bugs are crawling all around the condominium they just moved into four months ago.

"I couldn't understand where they were hiding, but when we would lay down, we just started getting ate up," she said.

Bitten night after night by these tiny night crawlers.

"You feel them when they bite ya, oh you feel 'em"

They nested in her furniture. Now her living room and every room are nearly empty. The furniture trash.

"It's depressing. Every time I walk into my house, my furniture is gone. I can't have company."

But experts say that's the best thing to do.

If it's in furniture sometimes it's cheaper to throw the furniture out than it is to have it treated.

Pest control workers have seen a resurgence of bed bugs. Metro Guard in Fort Worth say they have received two calls this week.

"We're finding that the calls are coming in faster than we first thought," said Darren Lowe from Metro Guard Pest Control.

Many say an increase in travel may be to blame.

The pests are like hitchhikers hiding out in the seams of hotel mattresses and luggage.

Millette King's landlord is paying to treat the rest of her home -- she just hopes it works.

"It's dangerous. It's a health hazard and it's not right," she says.

Well I am still alive and waiting for the doctor to call me back. I called to try to get an appt and they said they would work me in. Yea right. I am a little upset with them. It did start to drain last night and has gone down a bit but I know it is infected. I am thinking about driving myself up there and making them see it. This is ridiculous. You get bit by something and you have to wait to see a doctor even if it is an emergency. Second they could at least call back. I am beginning to wonder if the doctor even got the message. And yes i am calling back. Trying to keep my cool.

Could you possibly try a walk-in clinic? I know there are several around here that are just as good as your regular md but quicker!

Is this doctor your primary doctor? Do you have to see him or can you change doctors immediately (depending upon insurance). I know that my health care plan, Horizon BC/BS has a 24 hour phone line where you talk directly to a nurse and they can tell you what you should do. If you don't have to see this doctor because of insurance, I'd call another one asap or go to the hospital.

Actually this the dermatologist that my daughter saw about three weeks ago for Staph. My whole family goes to her. The office staff is really making me upset. My primary stop practicing a couple of months ago and I haven't found another doctor.
