ABC and Accuweather: 12 degrees higher than normal?

#1 Postby hurricanetrack » Tue Mar 21, 2006 9:52 pm

I just watched an ABC News video with Ken Reeves from Accuweather. He said, and ABC said, that there are water temps some 12 degrees above normal in the Atlantic. Does anyone know where these might be? I cannot find anomalies that high....

To see video, go to http://www.yahoo.com, click "news" and put in the word hurricane. Then look down towards the bottom right corner under news/audio/video. The title is "most dangerous hurricane season". You'll see. I was a little shocked at 12 degrees above normal. Wow. Anyone else see this?

The Gulf is about 3 degrees warmer then normal where the loop is. But most of the rest of the Atlantic is near normal. With the Eastern and the Eastern sea board being 1 to 1.5 degrees below normal.

Yeah, he was on GMA this morning. I was walking by the TV when the Accuweather guy and whats-her-name (?) were talking about the 12 degree increase. Didn't have time to pay attention, but it surely perked up my ears...

He didn't say were these 12°F temps were and according to that map it looked like off the mid Atlantic coast. He did not back up his findings.

Just publicity. When you want to scare people but at the same time attract them to your channel, just tell them about a horrific incident and tell them that you will keep them informed with the latest information.

Seems to me like these guys know how to work the "ignorant" media regarding hurricanes and forecasting. Remember, the media will broadcast almost any report that may or may not be scientifically based. His initial response to Diane Sawyer referencing the NHC on the 12 degree water was funny. He should have said they are right! That whole interview was crap to me, but scary to someone who does not follow this stuff like I do.

Did you all hear that there could be a 150 ft storm surge on the upper east coast as well? I heard the Accuweather guy say that it was possible if a major hurricane struck the east coast. I was amazed that he actually said that! Talk about mass hysteria! definitely sensationalism!

I don't about 12 degrees warmer but it is warmer than normal. My husband had commented several times how the waters really never cooled down like he though they would. Another words he thinks fishing will be good this year since his fishing was interrupted by several Ladies last year.

Maybe that little spot at 60N 60W is what they were talking about.

I bet that's the area that will have the 150 foot storm surge too. </snark>
