The ULTIMATE Disaster

#1 Postby Jim Cantore » Wed Mar 22, 2006 8:41 pm

Note: The odds of this are a googlplex to one, and I hope it never happens

A Tropical Depression forms in the Western Caribbian

A sunspot, solar flare, or strange even knocks out the satelittes, we are left with nothing but radar, sending us back to the 1940s

The Hurricane Hunters have another September 21st where they cant get into the storm because of technical problems, but we cant estimate from satelittes this time.

By the time the Category 5 storm comes into range of New Orleans radar, its too late, it slams into Grand Isle as a strong 4 and passes just west of New Orleans.

speaking of which, is the solar flare satelitte knockout plausible?

A powerful solar storm would definitely knock out some satellites and electricity. If that happened I'm sure the gov't agencies have backup power but without satellites it would be tough to warn people ahead of time who have no power...

They would never mention the odds, they'd just start a panic as usual.

I was going to explain how Solar activity affects satellites but then I realized that this falls into the topic of Space Weather which can not be discussed in this section so I won't. Suffice it to say that even if the Geosynchronous birds are knocked out there are LEO satellites that would probably survive so we would not be without satellite data. As for power grids, etc. that falls into the realm of the effects of Space Weather which can only be discussed in the Global Weather Forum.

Sorry if I sound insensitive here, that is not my intention. Wouldn't it be worse if said storm hit an area like Houston, New York or Miami. After all the areas you speak of have already been pretty much destroyed, as opposed to a previously unaffected area were the damage/loss of life would no doubt be higher.

I figure that fact would make the storm worse, it could finish off half the city.

Steve
and why cant it be discussed? this is totally relevent to the tropics section...and is important as Jim Hughes has shown us many times before...
EDIT before anyone posts: Space weather is important like Jim has shown us...and IMO so is any chances of our sats being taken out, as we have become sat dependent...
