I do think the mean old days have returned. We will see more storms...and they won't necessarily be long-tracking Cape Verdes, either.
I think that hits like Wilma in October/November are going to become fairly common occurrences. We've already seen Irene and Wilma....Mitch was close, actually hitting as a TS, and Michelle was close...all this since 1998.

As has been mentioned, Florida doesn't have an "active period" per se. The basin has active and inactive perioods. Florida is just geographiclaly located such that it will always have a high probability of a hit or even multiple hits hits during any given year in an active period in the basin.
