I went through Francis. My house is a short drive from where the strongest winds were clocked durring landfall and it was not that bad. IMO the reasons why there were so much reported damage from Frances was the huge windfield and slow motion at landfall, i think Jax all the way to Boca felt tropical storm winds , Floridians were underprepared and many destroyed property was old and/or poorly constructed, and there were many fraudulant claims, FEMA handed out millions to Miami/Dade county where they didnt even get tropical storm winds.

Frances was not a major hurricane when it hit Florida, the death toll was suprisingly low and the damage reports were exagerated. That is why I think it should have not been retired.

That is completely wrong; there has been $10 billion in damage with Frances, and that is definitely worth retirement.

As for Emily, $500 million in damage in Mexico definitely constitutes a retirement (not to mention being the only cat 5 in July, one of only 2 cat 4s in July (in reliable history), the strongest pre-August hurricane, and the first of 4 cat 5s in one season).

Emily's gotta go. It would be too wierd to see Emily on the list for 2011 (especially with Dennis gone) I mean, what if Emily tries to top her personal worst again?

As for Emily, I think this name will definetely be retired. I would think Mexico would surely put up a request for it, and Grenada certainly will.

I'm not sure Stan will be retired, I hope so though.

I vote they just retire every single one of them... the whole
lot! Each and every one of the named storms last year. They
all played a part in the year of all years... We will likley NEVER
see a year like that again. There is little doubt that we will never
see a trifecta like Katrina, Rita and Wilma again...
glad that's over with...

Ya know I blame my cousin for last season for saying stuff like that. After Katrina went through south florida and the central gulf coast he concluded to say, "It find it very doubtfull we or the gulf of mexico will get anymore storms this year.". He continued on and on with saying that kind of stuff and the opposite just kept coming true.

speechless... He didn't say much after that although he did say we wouldn't make it into the greek alphabet.

He is from PA and Wilma was his first hurricane and he couldn't believe what it was like to go through it.

Um, Stan did kill at least 80 people and was damaging in Mexico.

Besides, you can disassociate Stan from that non-tropical system and get technical all you want. For the people of Central America, they'll always associate the floods with Hurricane Stan. You can say "Hurricane Stan didn't do all that damage" until you're blue in the face. It doesn't matter. Stan had at least an indirect role in those floods in Central America, whether you like it or not.

The WMO and NHC can bicker over it all they want. I really don't think Central America cares how much Stan played a part in the disastrous flooding. If Stan was imbedded in the system, than Stan was a PART of the system. Meaning Stan played a role in the system.

I fully agree that Stan "killed" those people and cannot figure out how they arrived at the conclusion that the moisture associated with the bands of Stan did not cause the rain (seems as if the 2,000 dead from Mitch in Nicagarua should not have counted then as it was the same thing)
