What Began Your Interest in Hurricanes?

#1 Postby Jim Cantore » Wed Mar 29, 2006 8:19 pm

Just curious, everyone got here somehow :D

I got into it when 1995's Hurricane Felix ruined my day at the beach, I kept hearing the word Hurricane and being 5 years old I'm like what the heck is a Hurricane, 1996 comes along and I have my own tracking chart and here I am today 8-)

The first Hurricane I remember tracking was Bertha in 1996 and I was effected with TS winds by it, first Hurricane I tracked came to me

Hurricane Allison 1995 was the first storm I ever tracked. I don't remember why I was watching The Weather Channel, but I was hooked by the time Barry came along.

Audrey--forgot the year, was really a little kid at the time; but all the talk got me intruiged... then it was cemented by Betsy 1965... still a naive youth in school, lived in the Ninth Ward.. flooded--- as a kid it was a big adventure for me; but the interest since then has never waned.

Okay, I knew it was the latter 1950's... which made me little more than a small youngster at the time; but I actually recall quite vividly seeing my dad's hammock ripped from its place and flying down the alleyway. This was my first occasion of even hearing about a thing called a hurricane, and my interest began there--hence my sn! 8-)

It was late on a Saturday afternoon - August 16, 1969, to be precise. I was 12 years old and the ominous air was everywhere. In my history, the next day, August 17, was one that will live (and has lived) in infamy as Hurricane Camille changed forever (or created, not sure which) my whole perspective on weather.

I can still hear, smell, taste, and see that day just like it was yesterday - even though it's been nearly 37 years...

Can't really pinpoint. I remember watching Hurricane Luis on TWC when I was 6. Was interested in the sat pics. I began reading up on them. I have always been interested in weather. Hurricanes used to be just one part, but now that I have experienced them they are my main passion in weather.

The remants of Bob crossed over NC in 1979. That's the first interaction with a tropical (or former) system that I can remember. That sparked my interest. In 1999 (20 years later), getting the internet helped to speed along my ability to find more information about them.

Hugo it 1989 is the first storm I took a real interest in. Even though the center, extratropical by then, passed well to the North of my area the winds were still strong enough to cause some tree fall induced power outages. Next came Bob, and then Andrew during my infamous visit to South Florida. Even though Hugo wasn't the most intense (at least not in my area), both at home and certainly away from home, I've experienced he will always have an honored place in my hurricane memory.

My fascination of weather began when I was about 8 years old when one afternoon the sky turned black and green. I remember cause my mom liked to go follow storms and look at them as well as the rest of my family. I lived in PA at the time and when we got to my grandma's house it started to rain and soon after large hailstones the size of golfballs to baseballs started falling from the sky. I was so fascinated because it was summer and I never saw that before. From then on I was calling my uncle every afternoon to see if we were gonna have storms.

My "addiction" or fascination rather was due to hurricane andrew, hugo and a few others. I began to get all the weather and hurricane books I found. I started making my own forecasts on paper for the country. They were fake of course but, the point is I have been fascinated since I was a child.
