New Hondas To Help Drive Themselves
System Designed For Dozing Drivers
POSTED: 1:00 p.m. EDT June 2, 2003
TOKYO -- Are you ready for a car that nearly drives itself?
Honda's newest technology includes a back-seat driver in a microchip.
New Honda models being readied for market in Japan include an automatic braking system. If the computer detects you're getting too close to the car in front of you, a buzzer will sound, the seat belt will give a tug and the brakes will be applied slightly.
The Wall Street Journal reported that it is all intended to alert a dozing driver but not actually stop the car.
Honda said there are some product liability issues to be resolved before the option is offered in the United States.
