If Emily isn't retired, I will be extremely surprised!

I thought we would certainly see the new names today, I guess not. :(

I agree... there isn't a problem with the Greek alphabet, in my opinion. What does perk my interest is there was no mention of retiring Emily.

I agree, we used the Greek alphabet once and they are going nuts. It seems Emily will see the light once again in 2011.

Watch her try again in even more full force than ever in that case! Her past history indicates it anyway:

1987: C3 into Hispaniola that luckily only caused minor damage, 3 dead.
1993: C3 that grazes NC but miraculously doesn't make landfall. 3 dead, $30 million in 1993 dollars.
2005: C5 in July in the Caribbean, destructive to Mexico and the Windward Islands, several fatalities.

What could she possibly be like in 2011 if she isn't retired now?!

Then again, Emily needs to go. I get the point you're making and I agree with it. If not in 2011, then 2017...Emily is a dangerous name. Not retiring Emily would be bigger than not retiring Gordon.

It'd be a slap in the face not to retire Emily. She caused damage in Grenada, Mexico, and Jamaica. She made landfall on Mexico twice. Once as a Category 4 and once as a Category 3.

Another thing is when Emily made landfall about 4 or 5 hours after that people that live with in the area came on the board in said little damage had been caused. If so then why retire?

What do people think of the names Emma, Elizabeth, etc. for replacement names if Emily is retired?

Emily's damage to the Mexican Mainland may have been worse than Katrinas. Not many saw the photos, but I happened to be channel surfing one day shortly after landfall and came upon a spanish newscast on a spanish station here in Miami and was HORRIFIED at what I saw. I tseemed that even the foundations were destroyed

May I request to the mods (specifically cycloneye) that this thread be 'Stickyed' when the new names are posted, and let it remain for a few days.

Thanks,

Emily's second landfall sounds like Anita in 1977. Although Anita was a borderline 4/5 at landfall.

Both hit very sparsely populated areas. Both caused few fatalities. (Emily killed 6; Anita killed 10.)

Mexico never even gave a total on the damages from Anita.

Yet, reports described "entire forests sheered off at the roots." Plus, Anita delivered a 12 ft storm surge.

I agree with all except Vince. Vince was unusual, but that is not enough to get a name retired. Or is there something I'm missing?

Vince doesn't meet the WMO guidelines for retirement.

If Dennis can hit one country as a cat-4 and then another country as a cat-3 then Emily like the same situation as Dennis should be retired.

As a few have alluded to, it was Emily's second landfall that did the damage that merits the name being retired. At the time, I posted on this board Spanish language articles, which described entire villages being wiped out.

See also, the NHC report:

At Emily’s second landfall in northern Mexico, officials reported that 80%-90% of the homes in the fishing community of Laguna Madre were destroyed. Elsewhere near the landfall site, the storm drove 90,000 people from their homes, and thousands of buildings were reported destroyed.

Isn't just that, we know that the damage caused by Dennis in Cuba and in the US was extensive and 41 people died. The Mexican government should present enought evidence, and I think there it's, for Emily to be retired.
