SC Bisected by a Strong Squall Line-possible tornadoes

#1 Postby Stormsfury » Tue Jun 03, 2003 4:51 pm

Strong Squall line continues to fill in in Lower SC as a statelong line continues to progress to the NE ... nothing severe ATT to report but expect heavy rains and some gusty winds, possibly some small hail, and frequent lightning as this line continues to progress NE.

There's a cell with a nasty looking hook heading your way, not to mention that line bowing out over Beaufort. You may get a double whammy. Stay safe SF.

Sure thing, Isobar. Already getting lightning out ahead of the supercell from the Walterboro area (the one responsible for the tornado warning) ... the convergence between the one area near Beaufort, and the main line which continues to intensify with the appearance of a stronger low-level southerly jet have aided development in the last hour.
I believe part of the 2nd line down around Beaufort was the same line which passed through Jacksonville, FL earlier (HurricaneGirl's neck of the woods).

That convergence zone is making a bee line right for you. Looks like you're called to duty as a spotter. Hang in there, and keep us posted.

Looks like the worst has moved to your NE, but you're probably still getting pelted with heavy rain, lightning. Hoping for no damage.

FINALLY back online!!!

OMG, was that a nasty squall line!!!
Alrighty, a lot to talk about tonight...

First of all, a discreet cell developed just out ahead of it and produced a 50 mph wind gust and EXTREME rainfall briefly ... the main line came through about 5 minutes later with not as much wind, but heavy rains, and frequent CG strikes, including one which literally hit right OUTSIDE MY WINDOW!...The strike surged through a stereo system but fortunately it did not damage it (but the loud static like snow blasted through the house until I found the cause and shut it off and then back on)

Ok...down to business with the reports...

First of all, Walterboro does have reports of funnel clouds earlier tonight. As the two lines converged, the storms and squall line took on new life and invigorated them to severe levels.

Now the reports ...
Savannah, GA - 5:45 pm - Trees down and some flooding around the Savannah Mall area.
Beaufort, SC 6:20 pm - Trees down in the City of Beaufort
10 miles SW of Charleston - 7:00 pm - Widespread tree damage and powerline damage across much of Western Charleston County. This includes the towns of Ravenel and Hollywood.
Charleston Airport, Charleston, at the WFO (NWS) - 7:11 pm - 60 mph TSTRM Wind Gust -- 49 kt reported at the CHS airport.
West Ashley, Charleston, 7:20 pm - Widespread wind damage reported across West Ashley -- reported by an off duty NWS Employee.
Mt. Pleasant - Charleston County - 7:20 pm -Several Powerlines down in Mt. Pleasant - 7:30 pm - 5 NE of Charleston - Trees and powerlines in several locations in the town of Mt. Pleasant.

6:30 pm - Walterboro - Colleton County - Trees and powerlines down areawide between 6:30 pm and 6:45 pm.
6:50 pm - Hollywood - Charleston County - Wind Damage - Car port blown down on Dixie Plantation Rd. Dragged about 500 ft.
6:50 pm - Johns Island - Charleston County - Wind Damage - Trees and powerlines down on Main Rd. Reported by Local Media.
7:10 pm - Kiawah Island - Charleston County - Wind Damage - Trees down across several locations - Reported by Local Media.
7:15 pm - Summerville - Dorchester County - Wind Damage - Trees down across Jackie St. Reported by Local Media.

Furthermore, Boone Hill Rd in Summerville totally flooded out.
9,000 people without power (SCE&G)
During the thunderstorms, before the severe weather hit, a head-on collison on U.S. Hwy 17-A at S.C. Hwy 61 - with injuries - closed that intersection completely ....

Here, lost cable modem access until 8:45 pm ...
A very active day indeed ...
